Dartmouth Parents Thread

(Ahem)…actually, I started this thread, but it’s certainly correct that Consolation and the other Dartmouth parents have been great sources of information and support.

Welcome to the parents of the new '16s. Enjoy your four years. It goes by incredibly quickly. It seems like only last month that I was I taking my daughter, a '13, to Dimensions, and now she will be graduating this spring.

Coureur,

Talking about time flying; your older D and my D started college together (at different schools). Now your younger daughter is graduating in June and mine is coming back to Hanover for the 5th year reunion.

We are in Connecticut and thank you to all for the info! No, my S did not receive a likely letter either. It was a nail biter up until 3:55 p.m. I’m learning so much here! (wish i was going with him lol)

fyi on Dimensions…our son is a '16 and last year Dartmouth changed their policy on who they invite to Dimensions. While in past years it has been open to students accepted in the ED round, last year they were very clear that they only wanted students accepted during RD to attend. I spoke to several individuals in admissions about this. It was actually a little off-putting when we found this out as our son had been looking forward to it for months. He ended up attending anyway, since he had a friend who was a freshman and thus had a housing option. In the end, he had a great weekend but it was still a strange feeling that the EDers there were not really welcomed.

@1V1…yes my son is an athlete but even though he received a likely letter in early November, it felt wonderful to see the actual official acceptance letter! He will be attending the Dimensions program and will be staying with some of the athletes because only housing is guaranteed for RD accepted students. I can’t wait to meet all the new parents and learn the ins/outs from parents of current or former students!!

oops, Coureur, yes, you did start it and we are all so grateful!

I think Dimensions is designed to convince the RD undecided ones to choose to go to Dartmouth over their other choices.

My D said the lighting of the Christmas tree on the green tonight was beautiful and she is looking forward to snow. She says if it is going to be cold, cold and white is nicer than cold and brown.

^^ The Dartmouth kids always stage huge, spontaneous snowball fight on the Green the night of the first decent snowfall. Now with the new schedule it looks like school will usually be out of session for the first big snowfall. I wonder if when or if they will still have the snowball fight.

^they will still have it. The midnight snowball fight is a cherished tradition at Dartmouth. I believe they will have it on the first big snowfall of winter term. I think that is what they did one other year.

Congratulations, ED parents! It seems like yesterday that Sybbie was telling me that yes, the fact that the FA people contacted us for more info shortly before acceptances came out MIGHT be a good sign!

The time goes by so quickly. I miss having an excuse to visit Hanover. :(

BTW, since we are talking about Family Weekend, it is time for me to put in my now-ritual plug for the Chieftain Inn, a family-run homey motel just up the road from Hanover. For the more adventurous on a really tight budget, there is the Coolidge in White River Junction. It’s a funky old town and a funky old hotel: the land that time forgot! No A/C and shared bathrooms…I wouldn’t stay there at graduation or Sophomore summer weekend, when it can be hot. (The Chieftain has AC and a pool…) A local alum who goes for all of the home football games told me that the Sunset Motel is another good place to stay for the budget-minded.

Thanks for all this great info. Parent of a '16 here. We don’t have to travel very far to Hanover but it’s great to know the options. Anyone ever stay at the Norwich Inn?

^^Yes, we stayed at the Norwich Inn during our last visit to Dartmouth a couple of months ago.

Any suggestions for a great coat for Christmas that will keep my daughter toasty warm in Hanover? We live in Austin where we rarely need coats, so brands that really work during a serious winter would be very helpful. North Face? Patagonia? Others? Thank you so much!

For girls, the Northface Denali is a popular style. My daughter just replaced her old one that lasted her 4 winters in UG in MA, so she’s good to go for 4 winters in Hanover. A pea coat is a warm and stylish coat as well, you can often find good deals on them at Costco. Of course the main thing is to layer, and getting a few good pieces of Under Armour is well worth it. My daughter had twin roommates from Austin for 3 years and they survived the cold with the above suggestions.

In other news, my daughter has secured housing already for next year! Crazy that you have to look this far in advance. It is new construction, not even complete yet, over budget, but the location is GREAT!

She comes home tonight, but only for 2 weeks. She will be working as much as possible while home so I’m not thinking I’ll see much of her. :(

The only problem with Northface is that it’s very popular – and thus hard to make sure you come home with your own from any given gathering. :)

If you are interested in a peacoat, LL Bean makes a lambswool one that has thinsulate inside. I have it in black, and it is not only really nice looking, but truly warm enough for Maine winters.

Make sure she also has an old or cheap coat that she wouldn’t mind losing, because coats have a way of disappearing at parties, especially frat parties.

Aboutthesame, you don’t sew your D’s name into her clothing like going to camp? ;)

^^ As if. She bought a color other than black. Almost the same thing.
