I will be in Hanover for approx a week starting 3/11 for D’s knee surgery, thanks to the Dartmouth skiway. Is it bad of me to be excited to be there? ;)

GA2012MOM, hope the surgery goes smoothly and your daughter has a quick recovery. This has had to be very hard on her with all the snow and ice. Have a good trip!

GA2012MOM: Not at all. I thought we’d have to visit a couple of years when mysterious ailment felled the D. Hope you have a good time, whatever the reason.need for the trip. (Now’s the time she could use that grocery delivery service.
Guess it’s you!)

New topic for DM parents: corporate recruiting! Any of your kids going through it? D used corporate recruiting to get her internship last fall, and she is going through corporate recruiting again for her summer internship. It’s been a whirlwind, with many trips to Boston/NYC/DC for interviews (and a pain to miss class). As a parent, I can honestly say this is one of the areas where Dartmouth shines. So many companies visit campus for interviews, and they want to hire DM kids. I am very very impressed with the whole process. While there are many different types of finance/consulting opportunities, there were also many in totally different fields, such as marketing, restaurant mgmt, etc. In today’s economy, corporate recruiting is a huge asset and very beneficial to our DM kids.

Remind who that was that made fun of me when I asked if it was available?
I am taking the Coach from Boston and I am not renting a car, just going to use taxis for the surgery and rehab visits, so I will be hoofing it to the co-op for grocery’s. :(

^^ Twas moi, I fear. Please forgive. Hope all goes well. I would offer D’s assistance, but the rugby team is heading off on spring tour. You may have lucked out with the weather. It was 53 today and the snow is almost gone. It’s really not a very long walk to the coop. Really.

Teased D that she needs one of those “old lady” carts on wheels to bring home the groceries. I know the co-op isn’t “that” far, but my old bones will feel it. She has already signed lease for apt next year that is on Park St., but right across from the athletic center, or whatever it is called so will be VERY close to the co-op. BTW, 3 med students need a fourth roommate if any of you know anybody interested let me know, $900/month includes utilities. Brand new apt, in the last stages of construction. 4 BR, 3 BA, plus HE washer/dryer! Can’t beat the location.

gamom, there is a little thing called the “baggler” that enables one to carry multiple grocery bags in one hand comfortably. It really is quite amazing.

What won’t they think of next: [Amazon.com: The Baggler: Kitchen & Dining](http://www.amazon.com/BAGGLER-3340-The-Baggler/dp/B0014ZQE2S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1363046012&sr=8-1&keywords=baggler)

It seems like so many Dartmouth students take advantage of the study abroad. I’m sure it varies, but typically, what year do most students go and is it only for one quarter? Also, what are the costs associated with the schools programs abroad?

Sophomore spring & Junior fall are popular choices. Some FSPs are only offered every other year (rotating with other options in a given department), which can define the choice. I don’t think there are any multi-quarter trips, but some students take a second one. There are extra transportation costs, but the rooming/food expenses were a wash in our experience, since you’re not paying for housing or an absurdly expensive food plan [end of editorial comment :)]. And, if you’re receiving financial aid, it will be adjusted for some of the costs.

Parents of '13s -

If you are planning to have a Commencement celebration dinner this June at any of the nicer area restaurants I suggest you book the reservations soon. Last week I booked our party at Simon Pierce and it was filling up fast. I got a suitable slot but my first choice day and time was already filled.

PS: I don’t know about other places, but for Commencement dinners Simon Pierce has a fixed menu at a one-price-fits-all per person cost.

Boy, these four years sure have gone by fast.

Highly recommend Simon Pearce for the celebratory dinner. Lovely place, great food, and they do something special for commencement. I think you’d be lucky to get in at this point, but there are always cancellations. We actually ended up staying over Sunday night, so we went after graduation. S’s house had a gathering on Saturday, his department on Friday afternoon with substantial hors d’oeuvres.

Shucks, did not make reservations early enough for Simon Pearce for graduation weekend. Looks like we will be standing in line somewhere in Hanover. We also like “Elixier” in White River Junction, great food and nice place. We will take some time after graduation to see New Hampshire, Quebec and Maine. BTW, did they announce who the commencement speaker will be? Maybe Jimmy Fallon?

Dear Dartmouth parents,
As you probably already know, DM only officially hosts the RD kids. Although I am an ED admit, I have been excited for Dimensions ever since I first heard about it, and so I am reaching out on CC for anyone who can offer to host me. I’ve read other threads, and after seeing that some people have gotten lucky with this, I’m hoping that it’ll work for me too. If anyone here has a daughter (I am a girl!) who can house me for even just one of the two nights, I would be eternally grateful. Thank you!

I’d call my daughter but she’s a '13. She’ll be graduated and gone by time the next Dimensions rolls around. Good luck though. I’m thinking something will likely work out for you.

Hi plikapok, my daughter '16 is happy to host you with the caveat it may be a little crowded. I’ll pm you her information. Cheers, HK

WOW Hard_Knocks, thank you so much!

Congratulations, plikapok. Since you probably have a few EC’s at which you excel having been accepted into Dartmouth, I would suggest you try contacting those organizations to start making friends among those with whom you will spend portions of your next four. For instance, I googled Dartmouth sustainable farming and the first hit was the Dartmouth Organic Farm with an email address on the home page. Email the organization to see if anyone has floor space for an ED student for whom the college does not.

Thanks for the advice, ddpr03. Thankfully though, Hard_Knocks has graciously connected with me her daughter, and I’ll be attending Dimensions without worrying about a place to stay at :)
