Dartmouth Parents Thread

Yes, Lou’s is the greatest! The waffles especially! There’s also Yama, the Korean restaurant, which used to be in West Leb but moved to Hanover.

Welcome, EatPoems!

Just ran into an '11 yesterday who qualified for Ironman. He said he misses Hanover and loved his time there. If he does well I wouldn’t be surprised to see him give up his successful new career in high finance for the pro ranks, ala Evelyn Stevens, the former Dartmouth tennis player who gave up Wall Street for the pro cycling ranks.

On another note, who’s going to Homecoming?

I wish I was going to Homecoming, but D has too many '13 friends coming back, so no time for me. I’m very sad, as I love watching the parade and attending the bonfire, and since I am not an alum, I really don’t have a reason to go back. Are you going?

No, I cannot go, with the government shutdown, somebody has to run this country :<]

Thank you! Speaking of Ironman-like things, if I recall, there was an athletic challenge at Dartmouth (I forgot the name) where you were supposed to do something like 1000 pull ups, 1000 pushups, and 1000 sit-ups as quickly as you could. Most who took the challenge knocked out the pushups and sit-ups within a day or so, but the pull-ups made most peoples’ time extend for many days. It was just a general honor principle making people report their performance/time truthfully. People were doing pull ups in between classes to try to win this challenge. But the guy who won my year was very lightweight and able to do seemingly infinite pull ups, which he was happy to demonstrate. I think he might have made the challenge go away because he finished it within a day (I think even within an hour or two).

My S just got back from attending homecoming as an alumnus and had a great time. As a heads up, anyone planning to go to Homecoming next year can start booking now at some places. Already waiting lists at some hotels even this far out.

Just got back from my first parental visit to Dartmouth. Son is a dual degree student at Thayer and we went out for dinner with a group of his friends at Jesse’s. The campus was buzzing, the restaurant was wonderful and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting his friends. We got back on campus around 9:30 and walked over to Thayer to see the lab that son is doing research in as well as view where he does all his project work. I walked away very impressed at the opportunities presented to these kids. They are all lucky to be so engaged. That building was still packed with working students/study groups at 10:00 PM. It was an interesting comparison to his Small Liberal Arts College. The benefits of a larger student body and endowment are obvious! I look forward to returning to campus when I can spend more time (If he ever becomes available!)

Nothing beats Lou’s!!!

I’m a current Dartmouth student who can give you an honest opinion of what goes on here, what admissions officers are really looking for (this is more from like, stuff my buddies in the admissions office have told me), differences between Dartmouth and other ivies, on campus recruiting, social scene, athletics, etc. Feel free to PM me! And best of luck!

'14 parents, reservations opened up today for Simon Pierce for graduation. I felt lucky to get a table. Rumor has it they make the grads feel very special and give them an engraved gift (guess it is true as they asked for her name). Just a heads up in case you have interest in going there to celebrate. Hope to see my fellow CCers there!

Thanks so much for the reminder Dumbo. Glad you are on it. I just called and made my reservation. I remember going there when we did the High School college tour circuit. Time flies.

We went to Simon Pearce for a post grad dinner. It was delicious, and the gift was special. (Although it did not have the actual name of the grad.) The setting is lovely. I highly recommend it. The server said that giving the gifts–which we did not know about in advance, so it was a lovely surprise!–was her favorite thing.

^^I second Simon Pearce. We went there for the formal grad dinner, although it was the night before the actual Commencement. It was wonderful.

Cornell v. Dartmouth football tomorrow on National TV, NBC sports network at 4 pm EST. I remember scanning the stadium to look for my son. It was fun to see Memorial stadium from afar. Go Big Green!

Happy Thanksgiving Parents, hope your cuddly student is home safely and full of stories to share. Mine is still in transit, but safe. Aloha, MPI

Happy T’day, Magnum. Hope you’re all together by now.

Yes, good to have my daughter home for the LONG break! She has a few medical school interviews coming up in December that are pretty close to home so that’s good too! I still can’t believe that she is a senior in college. Time flies. I hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving.

Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Happy holidays to all. My daughter got back to campus today…says it is cold and empty, she has 2 1/2 weeks till her break. Hope you all are enjoying your time with your kids.
