Dartmouth Parents Thread

Whoa, Big Green invasion, 5 classmates here visiting. Great group of well-mannered kids, er, young adults, all anxious to enter life after Dartmouth. Some I haven’t seen since the first year drop-off. But first, they need to work on their tans. Happy Holidays parents!

Magnum, how nice that your son invited his friends to visit you in Hawaii. Big storm expected in the midwest, so I wish I was in the sunshine too!

Dumbo, c’mon out anytime.

Magnum, I need a tan on this Irish self. Can I come too?

GA2012, Sure! we could use more visitors over here, and tell your D when she finishes Med School to do her residency over here. We also have a shortage of physicians.

Magnum, I wish I could. It’s freezing in the Midwest right now and the wind is just chilling. On that note, are any of you going to winter carnival? I went last year during that huge storm, but it was so much fun I decided to go again this year, as it will be my last time. Hope to see you there!

Sorry I have a golf tournament that weekend

2 quarters to go! Son just arrived on campus after a couple of days of waiting out cancelled flights. I told him to work on his skiing and spending time with his future friends for life. He smiled and said yes indeed. Happy new year Dartmouth parents,

Happy New Year MPI. Coming into the home stretch. Other than writing the check it seems like the time just flew by.

Happy New Year all! Classes started back Friday for my daughter, she did mention town is still quiet. Magnum, you made me cringe with the “s” word, it was exactly one year ago DD blew out her knee on the Dartmouth slope! Best to all your kiddos in Hanover for the New Year!

Happy New Year to everyone! D got back to Hanover yesterday, and she loved running into friends left and right. One advantage to being a senior, I guess. She couldn’t wait to get back to Hanover. I still can’t believe how fast these years flew by. It’s frigid in the Midwest right now with lots of snow. I wish I had planned a trip to visit Magnum!

Dear New Parents,

Although Hanover is a long ways from nowhere, if you can figure out how to get there once a year, it will be the best return on your college investment (for you). Although it is expensive to get there, once there, students love to eat outside the dining hall. (This is not to degrade the dining hall; rather, to highlight that students like dining options.) Take your child and their posse out to dinner (they will know where they want to go given your budget), and you will be the nobel prize winner for the night; not to mention that you will learn tons about your child like the early days of driving the soccer team when they forget you are there in the driver’s seat and spill all their beans.

^great advice!

My son was admitted ED to the Dartmouth Class of 2018 (still pinching ourselves). I am so glad to have found this thread for answers to all kinds of questions and for good advice. Thanks for sharing your experiences here!

^^ Any relationship to Maisie McKenzie (the Scottish cat)?

Welcome to the group. Feel free to ask any questions, as trivial as they may seem. Someone here will have an answer. (And someone else will have another one …)

Alas, no relation but Maisie is the name of my dog. Thanks for the welcome!

I’m going to miss all of you parents and thanks for the past 4 years! It’s kept the empty nest a bit more bearable.

You don’t have to leave, just live the Hanover parent life vicariously through us.

I am going up next month btw, can’t wait!

Congrats and welcome Maisie! Funny story, my D is taking a Tuck class this term, and the bookstore was out of the book she needed (as well as being very expensive). Anyway, I looked on Amazon, and I found a new copy for about 1/3 of the list price. The seller printed out the shipping label and emailed me. It turns out she is a Tuck student, so she met my D at Collis right away. She also refunded my shipping. How is that for a small world?

Thank you, dumbo! That’s a great story. It seems that Dartmouth’s reach in the world cannot be underestimated : ) And it’s always good to save on expedited shipping!
