We did the same thing with a BoA account. My husband and son had a joint account, so it was easy for H to transfer funds to it if need be. S had a debit card of the Visa/MC type, and had no need for a credit card.
Slightly off topic, but I had D as an authorized user on a credit card (separate from our main ones and with a $5K limit) just for emergencies. Us in California and her in Hanover, I felt better knowing that she could take care of anything that came up. Never needed to be used.
Daughter coming from west coast. She will arrive for her trip and we will follow. Honestly, hardly bringing anything since I cannot visualize room until we see it. Figure we will order from amazon etc what she needs in way of storage. Have read online that Wheeler corner rooms are small. She will have a camp trunk she can lock valuables in as necessary. Wish I could find photos of wheeler rooms online in addition to the schematic.
Okierand, we are coming from the West Coast also. Pre-ordered some basics from Bed Bath and Beyond that we will pick up in Concord/Manchester area between First Year Trip and move-in day.
Google West Lebanon NH stores. Almost anything is available a short drive from Hanover. Just another option.
I figured weâd pick up last minute stuff in West Lebanon. Hoping there wonât be too much stuff!
I never saw a large dorm room in any of the buildings during my time as a parent, so @okierand safe to say the room in Wheeler will be small. My S lived in a corner 2 room triple in Wheeler sophomore year and it was hard to believe the 3 young men could move around without bumping into each other. They used the entry room for the desks, and the second rooms for all the beds. Convenient to science classes and Baker-Berry library. I think they enjoyed it because they are still close friends. http://www.dartmouth.edu/~orl/housing/communities/fay-whe-rich.html
We havenât looked into a joint credit card but perhaps we should. Our son has a couple of thousand in his debit card account, and of course weâre much closer which makes it easier to react if need be, I think. Our son is in WheelockâŠheâs got a single in a suite and we feel lucky (his room is 8 x 10 so itâs easy to imagine how small that is!). I think heâs back and forth with his roommates figuring out whoâs bringing the frig etc. It does look like most dorms are pretty convenient. Itâs such a walkable campusâŠ
(edited: son is in Wheelock, not Wheeler!)
New parent⊠just confirming that mattress length in dorms would be twin XL?
@okierand Yes, the mattress length is Twin XL
Son is back from his trip! He had a total blastâŠhard work, a bit of adversity to overcome, strong bonds. His trippees are planning a dinner together once theyâre settled in, and are hoping to find another weekend to camp together. Perfect! Next stop: Dartmouth for Orientation.
My kid loved her whitewater kayaking trip, and was very enthusiastic after meeting with professors for course selection yesterday.
We are still waiting for some communication from our sonâwhich is pretty typical for us. Seems like theyâre busy and having fun! Quick observation on the sustainability sale: get there early! Line was very long even before they opened the gate. Fridges, lamps, fans, bikes, plastic storage containers abound; night tables and futon couches, not so much. It was a fun place to hang out for a bit, thoughâmet some nice folks.
I am trying to send something to my son, a '20, from Amazon. It wonât accept his address for Hinman. I left out the âboxâ and tried Hinman xxxx on the first line and Dartmouth College on the second. I also tried putting it on one line. Amazon rejected it both ways. UGGGG! Any parents out there who can help?
@baxter Enter the address
Line 1: John Doe
Line 2: Dartmouth College
Line 3: XXXX Hinman
Line 4: Hanover, NH 03755
It should go through just fine. This is how I send my daughter things from Amazon, have not had a problem.
@saffysmum Thanks so much! Putting the number in front of Hinman did the trick.
@baxter Youâre very welcome. I remember struggling trying to get Amazon to co-operate when my daughter started. It took forever for me to stumble upon the correct combination. What I have learned is that Hanover is so small that it almost doesnât matter how badly a company butchers the address it still finds its way to the student.
That works for UPS as well. They accept XXXX Hinman as a street address.
As an FYI, that address form is also the one that works for UPS. Basically, you treat the Hinman box as if it were the street address. This drove me crazy at first before some helpful person revealed the mystery!
Whoops, cross posted. This is what I get for not finishing reading all the posts!
The one thing that I would add is that your kid then has to get over to Hinman before it closes to retrieve the package. Beware if you are sending anything perishable or time sensitive, because it can easily languish over most of the weekend. (My kid was particularly bad this way.
)
Does anyone know if there is a Dartmouth Parents Facebook page? I havenât found one yet.
