Dartmouth Parents Thread

I don’t think there is. I remember looking last year and there wasn’t at that point. There is a Dartmouth Parents account on Twitter though!

https://twitter.com/DartmouthParent

Hi, thanks b1ggreenca! I’m going to check that right out. I do think there should be a Facebook account…though this forum works ok, too. As to an update–our son seems to be settling in nicely. His first exam in the sciences was a bit of a surprise to him, but he says he’s made some adjustments. To be honest, our first concern was that he love Dartmouth, settle in, and find some good friends. All of this seems to be happening. He’s got some great extracurricular activities with like-minded kids, he likes his roommates and they all seem to be on the same page, he’s done a bunch of classic Dartmouth exploring (he saw Morphy!, has spent some time at the Orozco murals, flipped through an original Shakespeare folio, gone for hikes and paddles, been to a couple of football games, and is helping build the bonfire this week. He’ll be fine academically, and we know it’s a big transition. We are so happy he’s there!

Fair warning about the Dartmouth parent Twitter account. Dartbeat two days ago lampooned it :))

@saffysmum : As a veteran parent of a grad, I can only say that the world will be in good hands with humor of that sort abounding.

@AboutTheSame What a lovely article!

Indeed. Credit to both Dartblog and Big Green Alert for highlighting it – as they did the reports on the heart and grace in adversity displayed by '14 Abbey D’Agostino at the Rio Olympics that went largely unnoted by the College itself, but that’s a separate issue.

Hey @AboutTheSame I read about her here:

The “sweetness” of Dartmouth students. I’ve seen it.

Hi Magnum.

One might think the President of the College or at the least the provost could have said something …
Just call me Grumpy.

BTW, the article on the student’s take on the @DartmouthParent twitter account was spot on, sounds like something my son would write. And how many parents move to Hanover to be with their student? I’m sorry but let them lampoon us now, one day they will become us. Only a better version of us.

Ha ha. We’ve warned D that if she ever gets a tenure track position at Dartmouth, we’re retiring to Hanover. Probably guarantees that she would never apply.

The irony! My S actually works in West Lebanon, and has lived in Norwich and WRJ. But I strongly doubt he’s there for good, it’s just his first job.

In the meantime, it gives us an excuse to drive over and visit Hanover a couple of times a year.

Jealous I am, Consolation. I could go for a Murph burger right now!

We are lucky–we went up to see our son recently at Dartmouth for a school event he was participating in…we’re just over two hours away and we did a day trip. Got home around midnight but it was great seeing him, and good to realize we don’t need to snap up a hotel room for every visit. On a good sites to follow note, I really enjoy dartblog.com; Joseph Asch loves Dartmouth and has a point of view. Sometimes a bit curmudgeonly, but generally on point.

I gather the bonfire was lots of fun! It had to be knocked down because too many freshmen were trying to “touch the fire” and it became a safety hazard.

Ahhhh the joy of youth. My daughter reported a sit in has been started on The Green in protest to the election. I pulled up the webcam and there is indeed a rugged bunch protesting in the balmy 47 degree weather. She said they brought sleeping bags so it appears they may be there for the long haul. B-)

@AboutTheSame , S has moved to a NH town between West Leb and Concord, where his GF works. So less access to Hanover for us! Concord is sort of like a bigger Hanover. But I miss Hanover, definitely! (We just spent Thanksgiving weekend at their place.)

On the upside, I can highly recommend Vibes Gourmet Burgers right by the movie theater on Maine Street in Concord. And you can buy wine or beer at the theater and take it in to the theater with you! Also, the individual theaters are kind of like miniature stadium seating.

I will be attending the '20s Family Weekend this May. Should I be making dinner reservations at restaurants now or are there dinners on campus in the event schedule?

You don’t need to make this far in advance, although you certainly could. Unless they’ve changed the schedule, there are no on-campus dining events, except for the bagels/fruit/coffee at registration the first morning.

This is my son’s summer to be on campus, and I know they have a family weekend for that too. Anyone have any input on that, in terms of fun things that they have lined up for families to do?

^^Be sure to tour the Rauner rare book library. During the family weekend they allowed us parents to actually pick up and hold some of the books. This assumes you are acting like a responsible person and are not eating an ice cream cone nor accompanied by rowdy little kids. I got to thumb through a Shakespeare First Folio, some beautifully-illuminated hand-written medieval books, some first edition copies of some famous books (e.g. Pride and Prejudice). It was great.

The VINS nature center with raptors looks like it would be a fun place to visit. Has anyone been there? Is it a full day activity?
