Dartmouth vs. Amherst

How would you rate/rank Dartmouth vs. Amherst? Size and grad school/no grad school is one for those really familiar with them. Anyone have more insight on Dartmouth (class sizes, etc.).

Anyone have any info?

Both great schools that emphasize the liberal arts. Dartmouth is an Ivy League and more well-known.

Visit both campuses; interact with the students; sit in on some classes; eat the food; see the night life; and try to envision yourself at each place. Go to the one that feels better to you, and will provide the most opportunities for you in all contexts of your life. For most, that’s Dartmouth, but for others, it’s Amherst.

EDIT: For a more specific – and less general (i.e., useless) – post, please tell us what exactly you want to accomplish in college. What do you want to major in? Do you want to study abroad? You get the idea.

So you were headed for Amherst until Dartmouth pulled you off the waitlist? I’d ignore questions of reputation – they’re both very strong – and think in terms of fit for you. Have you visited both? Dartmouth is the smallest and most intimate of the Ivies, but Amherst is even more intimate and focused on its undergraduate programs. Both are beautiful campuses in small town locations, though Amherst’s location in “the valley” puts it close to other campuses in the area (UMass/Amherst, etc.), which means if it turns out that there’s something you want that Amherst doesn’t have, you might be able to find it somewhere in the “Five College” programs.

You’ll probably love either place – trust your intuition.

yes, both are great places. Haven’t seen Dartmouth in a few years, but I am sure it is still great (live too far to visit again at this time). The access to graduate schools, study abroad programs is swaying, plus it’s name is better known (although well educated know Amherst). People at both are great too!

Dartmouth has the strongest study abroad programs of the Ivies, and, I think, the 6th strongest in the nation. (That’s probably an arbitrary ranking – I can’t remember who conducted the study – but the point is simple: Dartmouth’s study abroad programs are awesome.)

Also consider that most everyone who attends Dartmouth loves it. It has the second highest alumni giving rate in the country, trailing only Princeton. (This might change in the near future, since a lot of Princetonians hate the administration for grade deflation.)

Good luck with your decision. I’d go to Dartmouth, but I’m biased :)

i chose dartmouth!!!1

collegesgirl, what was the point of this thread? Did Dartmouth accept you off the waitlist?
