Date rape drugs at Mizzou fraternity

I really hope there was a terrible miscommunication here.

Speechless

I’d like to be able to say that I’m totally surprised , but it takes a lot to surprise me anymore. Unfortunately , I don’t believe any school is immune or that this is a problem isolated to Mizzou.

In addition to ‘pushing the limits’ more and more, there also are many opportunists (criminals) around college campuses - trying to steal, either via credit card/debit card compromised, or drugging someone.

A student at a bowling alley had her cell phone stolen off the table when she went to bowl.

This was posted by another parent: "Parents, Please remind your kids to only drink from a can or bottle that they open themselves! Also, have a group of friends you can trust with you at all times! My DS was in the hospital last night after being slipped some “hallucinating narcotics” at a bar! Thank you to his amazing roommates and girlfriend that called the ambulance and got him the help he needed. He will be fine, but was a scary night(early morning) for all of us. He thinks he was a “mark” to be robbed because he remembers three “normal looking” guys, strangers to him, handing him a beer in a cup. Then when his girlfriend came back from talking to her friends, the guys "disappeared “. All I know is he was lucky and God was watching over him.” Another parent also suggested that maybe these three guys had designs on the GF.

Another parent posted that several room-mates in off campus apt are smoking pot at least twice a day, and DS/DD wants out - apt management acted pathetic. Have to get DD/DS out of there, because if they are caught all will be arrested if no one claims the dope.

Athletics, fraternities mixed with alcohol and drugs lead to sexual assaults. Universities need to take strict steps against these incidences to convey their message that they are not going to tolerate this behavior.

I hope these charges are found to be baseless. No relationship with the school or fraternity, just hoping humans aren’t this awful in front of others.

I don’t know whether they are true or not, but the fact that people likely will read this and say to themselves “it probably is true” says a lot about just how much has happened with sexual assault that this could be believable. I would hope it is not true, one person using a date rape drug is bad enough, but if it was not only supplied by the frat but required to be used, that would be monstruous. This is from the St. Louis Post Dispatch about what is going on with the Fraternity in question, the frat was already under suspension for numerous incidents, including a racial one, illegal alcohol use and things like having pledges fight each other:
http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/education/mizzou-fraternity-accused-of-instructing-pledges-to-use-date-rape/article_ca8388e7-f1bd-54b0-be4e-1909e283f33f.html

After reading this, if any fraternity was likely to do such a thing, this one may be it. As far as the national chapter saying the university told them they weren’t pursuing the date rape drug thing, I would take that with a grain of salt, after reading the full story. First of all, the University and the cops have not officially cleared them of that charge (if in fact it was myth, the university would be rushing to put a press release out saying it was untrue, given what a blot this is), it is also telling that there is still a Title IX investigation going on, which implies either this is true, or other incidents of sexual harassment and/or assault had happened.

This is a very serious charge. Speaking only for myself, I would withhold judgment on it until it was actually confirmed. The university not having yet put out a statement specifically exonerating them would not cut it for me. We are talking conspiracy to commit rape on a pretty grand scale.

Whether or not this particular allegation is true, it does appear from the article linked in #6 that the ΔΥ chapter at Mizzou has gotten into a lot of (often stereotypical-for-fraternities) trouble, and therefore should be avoided by potential fraternity members who do not want to associate themselves with that kind of trouble.

while I do not like frats and wish they would fade away because people on their own collectively decide greek life is not something for them it is important we do not say things like “(often stereotypical-for-fraternities)”
because if you think it is wrong to do that about people of a certain race, religion , ethnic background etc etc etc surely the majority of people in frats do not fit into a stereotype. stereotyping is wrong no matter who the victim of the stereotype is.

Not a fan of fraternities, but I find it very hard to believe that the allegations in the OP would be true. From what has been reported, it is quite rare for such drugs to be used. Sounds like the university did not find the allegations credible either. Alcohol is the most common predator drug. It certainly sounds like this frat may have a lot of problems with alcohol and hazing.

However, only the most naive would refuse to recognize that stereotypes exist, whether or not one believes them or does anything based on them.

Also, race, ethnicity, and somewhat religion are features that one tends to be born and raised into (and not easily changed), while joining a fraternity is a purely voluntary action taken after one reaches legal adulthood (like, for example, shopping or working at WalMart), so that the comparison is not really the same.

like I said I am not a fan of frats. but stereotyping is always wrong . one may choose to somehow try and justify stereotyping when they see fit …that does not make it right.

Stereotyping is not always wrong. A stereotype can be based on useful, actionable information that can help you make useful decisions.
