OMG. My daughter got accepted to grad school at NYU. She was also accepted to several other schools. She decided on NYU and sent in her deposit. TODAY, 2:44 pm on FRIDAY, she got this message.
D is just devastated. At least the guy who emailed her called her just now. He said he would write a letter on her behalf and she could also look into other programs at NYU. But it’s May 2!! And she wanted THIS program. I wish I could throttle somebody.
I know there’s nothing anybody can do about this, but I wanted to share. I just can’t believe it.

The timing is, as the kids would say, SUS. I wonder if they couldn’t fill even a modest cohort? Sorry for your daughter.
That is just horrible. Shame on NYU for not making notifications prior to the deadlines. So sorry for your daughter

I think this is the tip of the iceberg. Perhaps NYU knows it’s about to be sued, have its non-profit status revoked, or god knows what.
Does your D have a Plan B? Sending hugs. What a pain…

Well, she just got the news so she’s reeling. She’s been working on this for the last year. She said she’s going to get takeout and grieve today, then regroup tomorrow.

Can she add a pint of Haagen Dazs to her takeout order to improve her wallowing?
Hugs.

rightly so.
It is one thing to do this in the fall, or even early winter. but now?! truly awful

I’m paying for her takeout since I can’t be with her. I should tell her to add ice cream. And maybe bourbon.

Yeah, at least with grad school applicants booze is on the table! Not so cool telling your HS kid “it’s ok, have a beer”!

I feel hurt just reading this. I am so sorry your daughter who most likely worked so hard to get this program gets this news. I think they owe much more then a letter. The Provost etc must know people are her other choices. I hope she finds a solution but they should be helping her big time.
How many where assigned to this program.?
Lots of ice cream.

I don’t think it’s a very big program. And they pursued her!! Multiple phone calls and encouragement. That’s one reason she accepted their offer and turned down others.
I’m sending her some more cash to go out and drink responsibly.

I think I need bourbon, too. I have to start packing for our trip to Poland - we leave for Logan airport tomorrow morning.

I am so sorry. It’s unfair from NYU and refunding the deposit is not going to change that.

I hope one of the programs that admitted her will still have a spot (and fellowship/TAShip/aid).
What a terrible, terrible thing to do, not just after application deadlines but after the actual deposit deadline.
Yes I immediately thought of some governmental action against universities in general or against them in particular due to being in NYC.
In the meantime,
on the takeout of favorite food, favorite ice cream, and bourbon, brandy.. (or whatever liquor).

This is awful news. I’m so sorry to hear that and it really is terrible timing.
I do wonder if this is a harbinger for various humanities graduate programs in the current environment. If these aren’t safe at NYU, there are likely to be other schools caving more easily. But again - especially as the parent of an NYU alum - I think doing it at this stage absolutely stinks.

So very sorry for your D and your family. Absolutely disgusting on the part of NYU to do this AFTER the deposit deadline.

Yeah, I love the line about apologizing for the decision being announced “at this stage in the admissions process.” No, it’s NOT a stage in the admissions process. The admissions process is OVER. Bleep.

So sorry to hear this! Simply the pits!!!

Obviously NYU proceeded thinking they’d have this program . . . And then they didn’t. There are very few things that could change their situation so late in the game. The only thing I can think of is federal cuts in funding.

Agree. But the news from the administration is being parceled out to colleges in dribs and drabs, not one big “This is the new reality”. So funding cuts for the sciences. Cutting out ANY funding that could possibly be going towards what the administration defines as DEI (which a grad program in education is going to surely have an issue with). Threats of withdrawing tax exempt status. Going after foreign students without due process. These have been the drip drip drip, and I know from friends in higher ed it has been almost impossible to get out in front of things the way the process is unfolding.
A month ago I’d have told you that med schools were safe (Multiple Sclerosis-- neither red nor blue. Parkinsons-- not vaccine related, not a MAGA issue. Cancer research- only controversial when it’s using stem cells and then only in the Bible Belt. Animal research- potentially controversial except most U’s are so careful not to run afoul of PETA that there’s little to criticize unless you really want to stop science in its tracks.)
Guess what? As Harvard Med school discovered, they were NOT safe. NYU may have an inkling that they are next, and they cannot control the timing, the narrative, and the legal costs.
Terrible for your D, but I’m reasonably sure nobody at NYU saw this coming a few months ago.

Personally I would not blame NYU for this, but I don’t want to get political. Though that doesn’t help the personal hurt.
Faculty members are losing jobs as well.
Harvard just told international students it was okay to accept at a second school in their home country at the same time as Harvard, since noone knows what is going to happen.
