D’s internship starts in early June. She just received the offer. I don’t know anyone in Las Angeles. I don’t know the city. We will ask her to ask where other interns have stayed but after that … help! She needs a sublet or a room for 8 weeks. Where to begin ?
Absolute first is you need to know what city. Los Angeles is huge and she will want to live near her job.
Yes, find out WHERE in LA, especially names of nearby universities and colleges. Sometimes the place she will be interning at MAY have suggestions as well.
Find a nearby college and see if there is a room available in someone’s apartment for the summer as a sublet.
Yes, often college students will be happy to sublet for very low rates.
Air BnB
Congrats!!!
D did a three week stint in LA last year and found her place on air BnB. It was not super cheap but a
small studio in someones backyard that was in walking distance of her hospital. She had a
close friend that lives in LA who was only a few miles away.
Your D is much younger and will likely want new potential friends around.
Transportation is an issue so she will need to be able to take a bus or walk or Uber or Lyft.
I would start with her internship placement --either at her school or in LA.
Then, when you get exactly where she will spent the majority of her time, look at an AirBnB.
Betting you might find a room in someones home if need be.
Also Lyft and Uber have made things much easier all in all. Make sure she is set up and knows how to use the apps.
Then, of course, because you are the proud mom, you pay for her account :(( .
Is she aligned to any university in LA?
Start with UCLA housing and ask about intern housing rates during the summer.
Ask the folks where she got her internship. Someone there might know…or they may have suggestions.
My D got an unsponsored internship at BU for the summer and they have internship housing available for students in Boston for the summer, they don’t have to be affiliated with BU. It is expensive, but convenient and it’s Boston so anything else would probably be expensive. She had looked into one sublet for the summer before she found the internship housing and it was less convenient and just as expensive. So definitely look into colleges in the area that are close to where your D will be working.
There’s tons of students looking to sublet their off-campus apartments over the summer. Hit Craigslist or just google, there’s always plenty of sublets out there.
Be aware that housing in LA can be crazy expensive depending on location. My D shares a small 2-bedroom apartment with 3 other girls for about 1k each in rent, with another $100/month for parking. And as others have mentioned, LA is gigantic and traffic is horrifically bad, so she will definitely want to stay close to her office.
See if any colleges near her job offer summer housing. Also see if anyone in human resources where she will be working has a suggestion.
My D had an internship last summer in Hollywood and sublet a bedroom with her own bath from a UCLA grad student near Westwood. We negotiated a pretty good deal since D was subleasing for 3 full months from mid June until mid September. This worked for her since UCLA is on the quarter system as is D’s school UCSD. She also got a parking space in a covered garage which was huge. Be aware that UCLA students won’t be done until mid June. Places by USC will be available to sublet closer to the end of May.
Your D will probably want to be close to work because traffic is terrible. If she isn’t going to have a car she may want to get a place close to public transportation if she can use that to get to work. Public transportation is not great in LA. My D lived less than 8 miles from her office and her daily commute was 45 minutes each way.
My son was in the same situation last year. He ended up renting a room in a frat house near UCLA. Luckily he had a friend from UChicago to room with. There might be similar opportunities in sororities. Check out ULoop for USC, UCLA, or other local colleges. There are summer sublet listings that students post.
Congrats on the internship. Good advise above.
Thanks everyone. Her workplace is 6 miles from USC. Yes, I know that will be a lot longer than a 6 minute commute. But the idea of a summer sublet seems possible m.
Hmmm, that covers a lot of turf. I’d bet there are quite a few USC kids who would be thrilled to earn a bit by subletting their place instead of having it remain idle for the summer, if dates co-incide.
There are probably a lot of other colleges closer than 6 miles. (depending on direction) Most of the USC ‘kids’ I know are from wealth, so they probably don’t care as much about sublet as would the typical student. Of course, there are likely more pedestrian students on scholarship, so options may abound.
All-in-all California is nice from a climate standpoint, but way too expensive to live. May want to try a YWCA (if they are still operating there)
I would definitely look into a sublet from a USC student since the location and timing fit. She should also check to see if the USC sororities rent rooms in the summer,
