David Nicholls' Us

Just finished a terrific book that I thought would be of interest to those on this site. It’s called Us by David Nicholls and it is about a couple in their early 50’s, their long-term relationship, parenting issues and anxieties involved in parenting a late adolescent, and the like. It is one of those books that is very relatable – a fairly accurate mirror on contemporary middle-aged life. Even though the author and characters are British, their concerns and preoccupations are very similar to ours here. A lot of the main character’s inner monologues reminded me a lot of the discussions on this site.

(And, as long as I’m recommending books, I highly, highly recommend My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante. Totally different kind of book from the Nicholls. Best book I’ve read this year.)

I’m a big fan of Nicholls’ popular novel One Day (do read it if you haven’t, but avoid the movie that was miscast and didn’t do it justice), so it’s nice to know he wasn’t a one-hit wonder. Thanks for the recommendation–going to put a hold on it at the library right away (yes, I still read “real” books).
