Our daughter has friends who suggested Davidson young scholars program to her. She met the requirement score-wise. She has some interets which she wants a mentor badly. Her two friends (who are not young scholars with Davidson) seem to suggest a good mentor possibilty, and something else I don’t quite recall. We looked at the website, are not sure what benefit the young scholars will get. Does anybody have experience with them? Is it a worthy thing to do? Thanks for your input.

I suggest that you start your search for advice at the Hoagies website. There you will find links to discussion groups where many of the parents will have first hand experience with Davidson.

FWIW, over the last 5 or so years I’ve heard lots of families praise it and I’ve never heard a negative comment about it from those with kids it the DYS program.

It’s a good program. One of the best things about it is the parent network. Definitely worth the paperwork to fill out the application form.

Thanks. …

I also have never heard anything negative about the program.
I am actually on the parents forum that is associated with Davidson.
Have found lots of useful info there. Bear in mind though that there is LOTS about the little kids on that forum :)

Even though my kid had the scores to apply, we never did.

right? I just visited that and saw a thread with postings by people I know from other lists.

about the Davidson Young Scholars program was actually in reference to internal email lists and forums for parents of young people in the program. Those are my favorite places online.

Regarding the application, is the recommendation letter very important? I actually am concerned that the teacher does not know much about gifted education so she will write something generic, which would be considered a weak recommendation letter. The lack of guidance for a GT student is exactly why we thought about trying this opportunity. Her school has no GT program. Most teachers have no clue - I don’t mean to be arragant but that’s just true. What are good suggestions to rec. letters?
