ucb,
I would carve out an exception for certain specialities at various universities, eg, chemical engineering where the universe of colleges is not necessarily the same as the top brand name schools. As you were highly sought after as a UCB chemical engineering grad, so too would a Texas A&M agricultural engineering grad at some firms outside of the region. My point was more about the overall brand power of the college, both in the workplace (generally) and in the public recognition.

greatgirls,
Congrats to your daughter as she was undoubtedly a sterling applicant. Davidson is also one of the few elite colleges that does NOT place a high emphasis on standardized test scores. While nearly all elite national unis and LACs indicate that standardized test scores are “important” or “very important” in their admissions practices, Davidson only rates it as “considered.”

hawkette- I was going to say the same thing about Brown and Davidson. I have a little trouble imagining the same kid even being interested in both places.

Also, I would never consider Davidson a safety- top 10% or not. It could be a strong match, but a smaller school like that is going to take a lot more into account than just scores. Not to say that your daughter wasn’t a great candidate- obviously she was- but I would never tell someone a school like Davidson is a safety. You have to look at the percent of applicants accepted, besides looking at the stats.

Thanks Hawkette!

The GC has been a counselor for over 20 years. Four girl soccer players at Davidson right now are girls that she consulted with and recommended Davidson for. She probably really understands what Davidson looks for and therefore could make such a comment. She calls the school her “Hidden Gem” :)

Really most non HYPSM (+a few and 3-4 LAC) can be safety for some (small prop) people.
