Davis: GPA> other factors?

So basically, I applied to Davis out of state with a 3.53 UC GPA, but really strong extracirriculars 1940 SAT 29 ACT and a personal statement about health issues that got me a supplement for Berkeley. I have heard that Davis is really GPA based, and I was just wondering if anyone has really heard about kids getting in with low stats. There average GPA for last year’s incoming class was around 4.0…

Sure it’s still possible. Your SAT is above average and if your personal statement was really good it can only help your chances.

GPA is really important, I got rejected from their engineering program with a 4.1 (I think it was a 3.95 UC GPA), and a 2080 SATs. But I know they admit by major so if you’re worried, I’d apply as undeclared and then just switch majors.

hell no they dont admit by major, ain’t like berkeley. yo GPA is actually pretty low for out of state, keep hopin young thug! get yo obama on! dont be down

stay fresh

They don’t admit by major and the only reason you would be rejected by a major and not the school is because it’s impacted. Therefore you couldn’t switch into it anyway.

At my school the gpa is pretty high but every year there are one or two who get in with below a 3.5

I’m in state btw

If you just want to get into Davis, don’t apply as an engineering major. They generally want people with good grades for engineers.
If you don’t get in, be sure to appeal. LOTS of people get in that way.

^ lots of people dont get in through appeals. you need to provide new stuff for them to accept your appeal–not bs.
the website itself says appeals are rarely granted

^ most people I know who appealed got the appeal. That’s only what the website says, not what actually happens. I’d assume that the number of students who got in through appeal as opposed to regular decision is small, so proportionally it’s very few but in numbers it’s still significant. I agree that the new stuff you send them has to be substantial enough for them to accept you, though.

dont count on it. itz around 50/5000

ie 5%

I’ve known quite a few who got in through appeal, but the matriculation rate is low for those who appeal. In response to the comment about UC Davis not admitting by major, I strongly suspect they do and applications are reviewed by individual departments.

then yth did they appeal in the first place? ^

yes they do admit by major, or at least if ur major ends in “engineering”

Because most of the time it’s a last resort. They either didn’t get into any other good colleges or they wanted to go really badly and provided UC Davis with new, compelling information which swayed their decision to accept the student.

so how does that make the matriculation rate low, if they really wanted to go here/are desperate to go here?

I mean that it is quite difficult to get in by appeal… Around 10% or so… but most of the people I know got in because they showed new information. THe other 90% likely didn’t have anything new or compelling to say which is why they didn’t get in through appeal. For example my cousin didn’t include in his PS that he had to care for his grandmother, help run errands at his dads business, how he just won an NBC award and stuff. So yes there are many applicants who appeal, but the rate is low because only a small percentage actually have something compelling to say. Being desperate might not get you in, but wanting to go badly, having persistence and new information likely will.

matriculation rate is those that actually choose to attend out of those that are accepted, fyi

but yeah appeals are insane guys, don’t do it unless you’d attend on the offchance you got accepted

My bad. I was thinking of something else, but how about we change it to “appeal rate.”
