I love having more daylight hours after work. I would be happy if DST was year-round.
@saintfan: That reminds me when S2 and I did a cross-country trip to get him to his first job and, at a restaurant in Indiana, I was so confused I had to ask what time it was.
Okay - so are we in “normal” time now or off time? Can we just do it like this all the time? Is there a reason?
D3 and I were traveling to AZ and our phones for some reason hadn’t adjusted to the new time zone in New Mexico. I really wanted green chile stew in Albuquerque and we stopped at a restaurant and tried to go in the door. A man stopped us and said it wasn’t open until six and the line formed here.
Confused, we got in line, waited for our cell phones to change, and watched in astonishment as 20+ people joined us in the 15 minutes it took for them to finally open the doors! It was good.
When my daughter was in elementary school, I treasured the fall-back time change because it helped make her go to sleep earlier, something that was a huge problem for us. Of course it had worn off by spring-ahead time and the whole sleep thing was a disaster by then.
I always struggle as to whether we are 5 or 6 hours off from the East Coast. It does indeed make collaboration difficult as I have decided I will no longer participate earlier than 8am HI time. Calls earlier than that are fine without me. H used to have to get up to participate in 2 am and 4 am conference calls with people on the other side of the globe. It was very tough on him and made retirement all that much sweeter. He had to drive in to work to participate and than was exhausted for days afterwards!
I wish it was year round.
I didn’t use to mind DST, but now I hate it. This is probably because I am now more energetic in the morning than in the evening, whereas it was the reverse when I was younger. Also, as an older person, I find it messes up my sleep habits more than it does the younger set. It makes me happier to wake up to natural light in the morning, or at least see the sun rise before I have to begin my daily activities. Having the light later is nice, but the day is winding down for me then anyway.
Love, love love it! I start work at a crazy early hour regardless. Light or not, doesn’t matter so much. But the extra evening light means I can walk, bike, garden for hours in the evening, which mightily improves my quality of life.
Regarding AZ and not shifting, just think of Pacific Time including AZ for those daylight savings time months. Two hours off from the Midwest, 3 from the East.
When I was a kid in Phx, they did try it one year. I found it glorious even there, but in terms of energy usage, it wastes money, as air con use goes up. And as an adult in an Arizona summer, you typically want that hot ball in the sky to go away ASAP.
Did a college tour once in Peoria, Terre Haute and Evansville. We came from EDT and I think changed time zones 4 times (or was it 3?). Try and keep the times straight to make the tours on time. It was crazy. But the best part was that we had car trouble somewhere around Dayton, Ohio. D did not pick any of those schools but we still laugh about the trip.
I had to check, but indeed…DST was observed year round in 1973.
Love it!! The morning run will be at a relatively cooler temperature. And will have more time to run on street after work.
Prefer the extra evening light. If we kept it year round, it would still be dark around here at 8am in late December, which wouldn’t work for kids walking to school.
Another place that has 30 minute offset is areas of South Australia in an area I did business. It was very confusing, as we crossed the line throughout our stay. It made my blackberry crazy!
DadII, I thought you needed to curtail your running.
Hate It. Do not know a single person who would NOT like time to be left alone.
Including our dogs.
Changing time twice a year is really a big deal for the software industry.
Where’s that virtual Monday morning coffee cart when I need it!
DLS really did a number on me. For some strange reason, I got really sleepy by 9, was in bed by 10 or 10:30, and slept until 9am this morning because my bedroom was so dark.
Am just catching up on CC and read this. I just posted an update on my original thread. It’s LOOOOONG - sorry, but it should answer all questions anyone could ask!
Short - it was FABULOUS!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daylight_saving_time_in_Asia indicates that Azerbaijan, Iran, Israel, Lebanon, Palestinian Authority, Syria, and Turkey used daylight saving time in 2012.
