DD wants to go to Germany as a volunteer

My DD has found a host through Workaway which connects people with hosts in different countries as a way to travel
and helping host family with things. As a parent, I’m glad a raised a D who has no problems traveling on her own to foreign country. She is currently a soph in college and did live in Chicago last summer as a summer intern but this would first time she would travel abroad. Also as a parent, I’m worried about letting her do this since I don’t know the host. DH is okay with it. She was done her homework in contacting family what they expect for room and board. Am I being the typically overprotective parent? And has anyone else had a child do this on their own? Thanks

I spent the year after high school living with a French family. (I was 16.) I also spent part of the summer after freshman year board with a German family while I attended a Goethe Institute. Were the hosts vetted by the organization? Assuming they were, I’d have no issues whatsoever. It should be a great experience.

Interesting. As long as it’s legal and she follows the Schengen visa rules (no more than 90 days out of 180 days in the zone), it could be a fun experience. Or it could be indentured servitude.

My son did a summer program in developing country, not a cushy 1st World country like Germany where practically everyone speaks English. He stayed a host family that spoke no English. He was only a HS sophomore at the time.
