DDS Considering Law - Chances for Admission?

Hi there

I’m an early-30s dentist in Ontario who graduated from dental school in 2005. I’ve worked in “private practice” for some time, but have significant work in academia (I have multiple published papers).

Oddly, I’ve always had an interest in law and I’m likely going to apply for admission for the 2010 class to a Canadian school. I’d like to have a dual law/dental career. My friends have always said I have the “personality” for law. But I have a few questions.

My undergrad GPA was 3.9, professional GPA 3.4. I am considering Toronto, York, UBC and Victoria. Is this good enough for these schools? Will law schools look favorably on me given that I have a dental degree? My past experiences with taking tests suggests I should have a reasonable LSAT (I think at the very least, a 160, but probably somewhat higher).

I don’t plan to “be rid” of dentistry. I expect the JD will complement my health background, not replace it. As such - I will look for opportunities that combine the two (they should exist right?). I know the market for law graduates is somewhat bad right now. Will the DDS allow me to “avoid” the apparent poor climate for graduates?

I should prepare for 4 years of study right? 3 years plus articling - is that right?

Given the workload - is there a remote chance I could work as a dentist “part-time”? i.e. Saturdays.

Given that I’m aiming for non-mainstream work afterwards (i.e. non Wallstreet) stuff - how important will my “class rank” be? (I’m concerned about trying to memorize stuff at the level of 22 year old classmates…) I absolutely don’t feel I’ll have the means to finish top 10, even top 25. I’m guessing I’ll pull an “average” class rank.

Of my four school choices, two are in Ontario, two are in BC. Will degrees a degree in either jurisdiction allow me to practice in the other one?

Thanks in advance.
