how hard is it to get into ewrt 1a? what do you need to know? the basics of grammar? do you need to write an essay?

2 years ago when I took it it was fairly straight forward. I took the state english and math tests before it because i was enrolled into SJSU before changing my mind and I passed those two. DeAnza’s seemed to be harder, but maybe its because i took it 6 months later. I think it was a lot like SAT english; involved vocabs, grammer, ananyms and 2 essays.

I took the placement test today. I don’t really know their rubric, but I placed into EWRT 1A
It’s exactly like the sample questions on the CollegeBoard site. It’s not really basic grammar. The questions remind me of the SAT. They say it’ll take a minimum of 2 hours, but i finished in 1. You write a sample, but I don’t think it’s an essay. 30 minutes for that part.

If you have a decent grasp on the language, you should be fine. A majority of it goes into mechanics; this portion is computer-based and adapts to your peformance. I vaguely remember a writing sample as well, but it was extremely short.

I went in one weekend when I had nothing better to do and ended up getting a score that placed me into 1A Honors at Foothill.

(That’s another thing to keep in mind: You only have to take the placement once between the two colleges. I ended up attending Foothill because of their TAP agreement with UCLA.)
