On my second ACT in September, I received a 33 (which was my previous goal…). But now, I’m aiming for a 34. My main concern is the possibility of de-proving (opposite of improving) my ACT score on the December ACT. Does anyone have any suggestions/words of advice to prevent this from happening? Or must I accept the fact that de-proving is a big possibility since the difference between composites on the ACT is dependent on a few questions?

Just don’t send it if you do worse; you’ll have already sent your 33 (which is great! I got a damn 32.25, one question off) so they won’t even know if you took the december one which comes in on like December 29.

Uh, I have a 34 in the science but I had a really bad day when I was taking an ACT sometime ago. I completely could not understand a whole passage and then I spent too long on it and didn’t complete another one and my science score dropped to a 24 and my composite, as you can imagine dropped significantly too (~140 points on the SAT).

So, yeah, having a bad day can drop your score significantly. However, if you feel that your 33 wasn’t your best effort, I would tell you to retake it. But, if you feel that it suits your abilities, taking it again can’t help much (or sometimes you can do even worse). Only you know this.

I knew my score didn’t match with my abilities so I retook it with the last of my mental strength and got a 34, so you can improve on the positive note. I knew that I made like a million stupid mistakes though (over 10 on my 32 composite) so it made sense why my score did increase. It wasn’t from studying or anything and it wasn’t luck either. I was very confident and the mindset paid off. I am willingy to accept though that no matter what I do, I will never feasibly get a 35.
32->(low score)->34
