DE Shaw "socializing" event..to go or not?

Hello!

I’m currently a rising sophomore studying computer science at Brown University, and I received a message on linkedin by one of the recruiters at DE Shaw basically inviting me to a BBQ event hosted by the company in light of my “outstanding record of achievement” at Brown. I’m kind of confused because for one, I don’t think I’ve done anything THAT extraordinary, and secondly, I don’t understand the point of the event. It’s not recruitment-based, I presume, and I haven’t heard of the company until this message (which speaks for my interest in this particular field). I can theoretically go as the event will be in NYC and I will also be there for a summer program, but then again, I don’t know anyone going either so what if it’s just awkward?

Any insight into what the invitation means and whether or not to go would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

I have no insight to offer but the company does sound very interesting. I think I would attend if it were doable. https://www.forbes.com/sites/nathanvardi/2015/10/01/the-d-e-shaw-mafia-2/#731b252d5990

It is a technique to get to know you early in the process. HR people scan through and send them. You should go if interested. It’s a good company if you like that type of business.

Can’t hurt to go. Always good practice and you never know who you’ll meet or the opportunities that might present themselves. I would consider it recruitment based, in a soft pitch kind of way.

Some folks (and employers) consider having the academic chops to get into Brown to be an achievement. You’re doing a lot better than 99% of the folks your age.

Plus, free food!
