Essay Topic 1: “Write about someone who influenced you in a significant way,” *

Do you think it would be okay to write about a dead historical figure? Or are they looking for someone whom you have actually spoken/interacted with?

I think writing about a dead historical figure would be fine, it’s still someone who’s influenced you.

I might as well post this here rather than cluttering up the forums:

I was thinking about this same question, except submitting an essay where I talk about a tree that’s influenced me. I personify the tree throughout, so it makes it a little more relevant. Would it be OK to submit this?

I think that’s pushing it a little bit, but if you can truly personify the tree, I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. Judging by the fact that they have four different prompts all basically asking for the same thing, “something that helped shape one of your values,” I would say that they aren’t too concerned with the subject of your essay. It just has to be something/someone that had a big influence on you.
