Deadline Approaching, need help choosing a school [NCSU $23k, Purdue $42k, GT $52k, Duke $93k, Alabama $7k first year, $22k after]

I agree with above. If you do not want Engineering there is no reason to go for GaTech for 52k with loans…

@JCMCL, I missed your goal above…
Sounds like UNC is a best fit…

Ga Tech - not worth it (the loans, especially $50K which is too much - $27K is the federal max) and I agree with your logic for engineering over business.

It’s funny - my son’s second internships wasn’t engineering - and I asked him then why did they want an engineer - and he said they wanted somone who thinks like an engineer.

Here’s a stat on engineering - so to me, your logic makes sense - if you major in engineering. Engineers are in demand - whether they work in engineering or not.

"Data gathered by the Washington Post suggests that as many as 75% of those with science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) degrees don’t work in their respective fields. "

Good luck.

The numbers are based on University of Alabama’s cost of attendance as given at https://afford.ua.edu/cost/ , minus tuition and first year room and board for the Presidential Elite scholarship.

Ahhhh - but if it was you or whoever put that there- their COA includes $3140 for transport and $3696 for miscellaneous - so it’s way overstated. No way anyone from NC is spending close to that - unless they went Greek or bought a suite for a football game. Not even close. I don’t think I spent $70K on my son over 4 years - and that includes rent.

I’m not a fan of COAs - I’d rather scope out the tuition, room and board - and that way you are comparing apples to apples - as some schools include travel, miscellaneous, insurance and others don’t.

btw - @jcmcl you might contact them - but I think you’ll get ANOTHER $2500 a year at Bama from their engineering scholarship for 30-36 ACT. They get smart kids - why? They buy them!!

You might ask - as Presidential Elite does not appear to be excluded and if this is the case, with the $1K that comes each year + another $2500 - you’d be able to fund a meal plan, etc.

Engineering Leadership Scholarship
$2,500/year for 4 years ACT: 30-36 composite score
SAT: 1360-1600 score on redesigned exam
These awards are automatically offered to freshmen entering Fall 2024 directly from high school, regardless of residency. Engineering Scholarship Program awards will stack on top of scholarships offered by Undergraduate Admissions (excepting National Merit Finalist packages).

Getting assured admittance to Kenyan Flagler Business school at UNC Chapel Hill is HUGE. If you don’t want to continue with an engineering path and are interested in business that’s a no brainer.

That’s not a positive - and it’s unlikely to matter. Tons of kids from my son’s school went to his school and even his best friend from hs, they barely saw one another. Colleges are big.

But it’s not a positive - because you are going to college to grow and expand, not live HS 2.0 - so it’s good that you’ll likely not be hanging out with your HS friends.

I disagree - the students logic is sound for engineering is quite sound- and for technical sales (as they mentioned), often an engineer is desired vs. someone with a business education.

No brainer to mee too. Top college, business school, reasonable cost, matches your interest.
BTW paying for 2 students at the same time for college is not a joke. Do not twist your parents’ hands…

But this is not a business major. Read the job descriptions. This is often an engineer.

Can he take Engineering minor at UNC while completing business degree?

UNC sounds like a great option. That said, take a look at Industrial Engineering. It might be a nice blend of business and engineering.

Depending on how many AP/DE credits you have GT can be doable in 3 years. Look at their ISyE program. No bad choice here. Good luck.

Would be for OP to decide?

But if OP doesn’t want to study business…i’m not saying that UNC and KF aren’t fantastic (obviously they are) - but doesn’t seem like OP has interest and I find their logic in studying engineering very sound and well thought out.

Yep, I saw that minor too.
OP, look at suitable options at different colleges for yourself.

@JCMCL are you excited about Bama?
What about NC state?

I came here to post the same.

With 50k loan and parents paying for 2 students?

@JCMCL,
UNC CH does not have many engineering options, but apparently allows cross regisration with Duke and NC State. I would reach to school and research what is realistic.

As a major to explore. Not suggesting any specific school, which is why I didn’t mention ISyE. Sorry that wasn’t clear.

I want the OP to know there are options to combine engineering and business. Industrial Engineering is a common major for that interest. UNC KF + engineering minor may accomplish much the same. In addition to budget considerations the OP should look into the curriculum at the final options to see if they meet their needs. They don’t need to compromise by choosing one or the other.
