Dealing with a deferral AND two back-to-back rejections?

A few weeks ago, I was deferred from Tulane. I wasn’t really upset, but it was a small blow to my self-confidence. Friday, I was rejected from Vanderbilt. I knew that this would more than likely happen, so I wasn’t devastated or anything, seeing as I had mentally prepared myself for a rejection.

Today, I was rejected from Southern Methodist University, a school several people told me I shouldn’t worry about. This really shocked me, to tell you the truth. After all of these negative responses, I am VERY upset. I feel like I’ve done everything I was supposed to do to get into a good college, but now I’m being rejected by them all. I got good grades and took lots of AP classes. I was involved in my school and in my community. I even did well on the SAT for my school (the average here is about 1550). My recommendations were more than likely great (all of my teachers like me), and my essay was very well-written according to my English teacher.

How can I deal with the fact that I did everything I was supposed to, but still wasn’t good enough?

There are some 4,000 colleges and universities in the US. Sit down with the search engines here at CC and at CollegeBoard, and run some searches using your data, and things that are important for you. Then, take a good long look at the lists that come up. You are likely to find many places you hadn’t thought of before.

Since you have had two clear rejections, stop by your guidance counselor’s office, and ask them to call those admissions offices for some feedback. There might be something specific in your application that you can fix before the next batch of applications are mailed out.

Good luck!
