Dealing with overwhelming stress

Do any parents know of any websites that provide a forum to just rant? or simply get things off my chest? I’ve been feeling very gloomy lately and I’m very tired of it. College is in less than three months and I need a major attitude adjustment.

There is our "Say It " thread…

It also may be helpful to keep a journal, and to write in it not only when you are wanting to vent, but also when you are feeling good.

Do some yoga, breath in and breath out.

And, ideally, find a therapist or a counselor.

-Go to gym, swim, walk, run, rollerblade, whatever is you favorite exercise. It is much much better than any drug. I had never had drugs, but I tell you, there are no negative impact on my brain from the exercise. And after I swim outside at 6am before work, they can bang on my head, believe me, I will feel only one thing - utter happiness. There is no question in my mind that any exercise and swimming in particular produces some “happy” chemicals in your body and then nothing can put you down, not even you yourself (which is what we all tend to do, we are our biggest enemies, we are our biggest source of depressions) got to take care of yourself, or your inner negativity will take you over. There is nothing special here, just normal life and those who do not take care of themselves end up feeling run down almost 100% of their time.
If you are just going to college, than I have to tell you, that this is one of the least stressful experinces in your life. Definitely have to learn to take care of yourself as much much higher level of stresses are ahead than the college, which should be fun if you personally fit where you are going.

crossrds, I second the therapist idea. Also, please don’t be discouraged by the previous post saying that college is one of life’s least stressful experiences. That’s not true for everybody, and when you’re a young person heading off to college, this may be the most stressful experience you’ve faced to date. Take care of yourself.

I’d suggest just typing out all of your emotions on a word document, leaving it there for a few days, and then checking back to see if you still feel that way. if so, add to it. write more. when you no longer feel that way, delete it. It sounds silly but it makes me feel better sometimes. You could always do the same with a journal, but it’s easier and faster to type it.

This may sound old-fashioned but how about prayer? The Serenity Prayer has seen many many people through trying times.

I’m a big believer in pulling weeds when stressed. A little physical activity and no real distractiions so that your mind can work through everything. Very cheap therapy and a tidier flower bed to boot.

There’s Bluto’s advice to Flounder: my advice to you is to start drinking heavily.
