Dean's Seminars for Freshmen?

Has anyone taken these courses or know about them?

Are they as challenging as a regularly course?
Do they count towards credit (either for major or general requirements)?
Is it worth taking?

Thanks!

I have taken a couple and they replace some of the science or other subjects requirements. It is worth it, they are really good and they are taught by top professors. The only problem is that, for whatever reason you want to transfer to another college, these credits are untransferable. so be sure you want to stay at GW before you commit to the courses.

if memory serves - i read somewhere that there were some limitations as to who could take Dean’s Seminars? only those who are not participating in one or two other first year programs?

i’ll look for that limitation and post it when i find it…

S really liked the Dean’s Seminar he took. The classes are small; the topics can be fun & interesting; andlike Multitasker said can fulfill requirements. They don’t count for credit for a major, but can count for GCRs.

I am pretty sure Deans Seminars are only available to students in Columbian College. My D is in CCAS, and had a very hard time signing up for them the first time due to their small size, in fact she had a hard time signing up for ALL of her first choices as a first semester freshman. Make sure you have plenty of alternates in mind when you go through the signup process!

Thanks for the responses. How was the workload for the seminars and how did it compare to your other courses?

i took a dean’s seminar each semester. the workload was comparable to my other courses, although of course it depends, as some are much more work than others. all of them fulfill a GCR and they are only available to columbian college freshmen. i had a great experience with both. the small class size combined with the great professor (all are taught by top professors) made for a really great class where i learned a lot. basically, i’d definitely recommend them!

How do you sign up? Is it luck of the draw, first come first serve, or an application? If class sizes are kept small…then I assume not everybody gets in…or do a few people sign up?

You sign up for them during course registration, the same way you sign up for any other course. And yes, not everybody gets into them.
