Dear (first name) or Dear Ms./Mr. (last name)?

I wonder if the pattern that I have seen is true. So far, my acceptance letters have been addressed Dear (first name), and my deferral letter from Yale was addressed Dear Ms. (last name). Do they try to be impersonal in the rejection/deferral/waitlist letters and address my last name, or does it vary by college? For you Yale EA admits, how were your letters addressed?

acceptance letter: Dear Mr. FirstName LastName

so now i really don’t want to open my letters come april 1 if i can tell by the salutation alone.

Well, you can usually tell by the envelope too… If you get a big one, you are in. If you get a small one, you are not (although, there are some exceptions to this).

that’s true…i should have written “open my email”. i don’t have the patience to wait for the actual letter. ;)

I was actually just talking to encomiumII about that on IM. Some schools, like princeton, don’t even give you an email :p

I got my princeton ED decision by email, but I had to ask for it. I’m an international applicant so maybe that’s why.

The email was titled “Princeton University Decision” btw!

mercury – who’d you email to arrange that? i’m an int’l too…sort of…

ya how do you go abt doing that mercury? one of the schools i am applying to says they even release decisions over the phone but i really am not sure how i would react once i hear my decision! so i prefer receiving the e-mail.

I just emailed admissions at princeton dot edu and politely asked for my decision (it was 5 days and i hadnt received any mail). I put my name, address, birthdate etc. in the email too.

They replied next day.

But make sure you send the mail from the same address which you put on your application. Else they won’t release the decision even if you identify yourself in the mail.

thanks a million

merc: thanks, so what happened ultimately. were u accepted, deffered or rejected?

I was deferred.
