All right, I realize I am taking the risk of creating a huge thread war, but I think that, since it’s on the prep school forum, and it’s summer and I’m bored, I’m willing to take a gamble. I’m wondering what people on the Prep School Forum’s opinions on Affirmative Action are. Also, if anyone else has any issues that they’d like to hear opinions about, post them on here. I know, I know, I’m really bored.
Remember, please, no cutting people’s heads off. We’re supposed to be nice here on the Prep School Forum. :)

Affirmative Action is like a cloth napkin.

DONT START IT HERE…it always end up pretty bad and ugly and messy

I’d like to have a good debate, but not on this topic. I believe the poor horse has suffered enough. Perhaps a more obscure topic? Something that isn’t… dead? :D

But, if you insist, Affirmative Action it is. Maybe we should divide up into teams? That would be fun.

Personally, I’m against it. Maybe if it were based on socioeconomics instead of race, then my opinion would be different. I just think the affirmative action, as it is now, is racist.

All right, fair enough, Chaos. I’m just going insane with the heat here. None of us can vote, anyway, so it really doesn’t matter. What should we debate instead?

Oh, come on, have we nothing to talk about here?

This is too controversial.

I suggest we discuss: Braces? Yes or No?
Airconditioning? Good for the soul or too luxurious?
Fast Food: Big Mac’s or Whoppers?

Defintely good for the soul.

no braces.
too luxurious, it ruined the sense of a community
whoppers, though BK is more expensive than mickeydees, but cheaper than backyard burger, and therefore annoys me

Such an intense debate! I’m not sure I can quite handle the heat!

MBP, you have clearing never spent the summer in Arizona.

Never needed braces, but if you need them badly, why not?
Good for the soul… I just can’t handle the heat haha
umm i never had a big mac, so whoppers.

I’ve posted on this subject before. I’m against it. It is patently racist in nature because it discriminates against different groups to benefit others. That’s what its proponents never admit. It is a zero-sum game. AA also demeans the accomplishments of deserving minorities because a cloud is often cast over their admission. In a race neutral environment that would no longer exit. I believe the law is unconstitutional and will be overturned by the Supreme Court.

AA is what is legally called ( i believe) a “remedy” action. It is designed to correct years of discrimination at the college level and other places.

I love my country as much or more as the next guy, but anyone who believes that discrimination hasn’t taken place, doesn’t take place or won’t continue to take place is living in their own private Idaho.

I won’t pretend that the program doesn’t lead to reverse discrimination, but I don’t see any alternative for now.

Oh yeah - braces Y, a/c N, Whopper.

fun is fun, have you evern spent time in a place like Arizona in the summer (gets to be 100 degrees before noon)? If not, I refuse to accept your position on air conditioning.
New questions: School uniforms in private schools?
2008: Obama or Clinton for democratic candidate?
Should children be allowed to vote, providing they can prove they can read and write and have the logical reasoning skills necessary to make an informed decision (at least as well as that of an average adult’s)?

Arizona has dry heat. It doesn’t count. If they have a “wind chill factor” they should have a “dry heat factor,” too. And, by comparison, 103 in Phoenix is practically the same as 76 in Washington, DC.

Uniforms (or uniform dress code): Yes, universally.

Obama or Clinton: Yes, one or the other I’m guessing…if I may go out on a limb.

Kid vote: Yes, ALL kids should get in the habit of voting. If creating a smart kid vote makes sense, then so does abolition of the dumb adult vote. The bigger problem is people who can vote, but don’t. This link, for kids voting, helps address that problem: http://www.kidsvotingusa.org/ (Plus, if you read the history of the organization, at the bottom of the “About Us” page, it ties back to Arizona!)

SAT Scores Is Just A Piece

You take a black guy from Harlem in a rough drug infested Neigborhood in a Public School System with average taechers and he manages a 1350 on the SAT is equivalent or superior to a white from a wealthy or Upper Middle Class suburb who scores 1450. Put the white kids in that environment for 18 years and lets see what they score. By the way, Asians acore higher than whites and are turned down to admit whites at prestigious schools but it’s funny that whites don’t complain about that.

Wealthy Legacy Parents get their kids into Ivy League Universities despite their kids mediocre achievements with all their priviledge (Elite Prep Schools) and wealth (money to help them get the best test preparation etc…). Whites get tremendous breaks in this society and the College Admission world at top schools. They’re against Affirmative Action to correct 400 years of racism and discrimination to protect their white priviledge in America.

The selective Institutions will have a higher graduation rate among black students because their admissions is more selective choosing the best minority candidates. A lot of regular Colleges will take many unqualified African Americans saddling them down with student loans and cashing in on pell grants and other minority scholarships knowing that they are likely to fail. The Urban Educational Public School System has failed to educate blacks miserably.

Blacks from Suburban Public Schools that live in that Community that have educated parents achieve at the same rate and in some cases more than their white counterparts. Blacks from Elite Prep Schools are intellectually and academically prepared for Elite Universities and good Colleges and have outperformed Suburban Whites in good Public Schools. It’s all about academic preparation and the students love of learning, not the Race as most Conservative Pundits have tricked Americans to believe. They have been so successful at this chicanery that the average white student believe blacks need a break or some type of boost to get into great Colleges, as if blacks are inherently inferior and can’t obtain Ivy League Admissions based upon merit. A shame of this Conservative talk show crazed country.

Thought the debate was over a/c in boarding schools. As a frequest visitor to Tuscon (parents) I can’t imaging life w/o it. Dry heat or not. Love Tucson by the way.

Dress Codes: ABSOLUTELY.

I fully expect HRC to be elected POTUS. This is why Mrs. fun is fun (not her real name) and I are looking into re-locating to Costa Rica, New Zealand, Australia, Bermuda.

A “good” voter SHOULD have certain attributes including education and some life experience. Since it is FAR more likely that someone over 18 will have that, I’m fine with the 18 year old voting age. The idea that my ill-informed, immature and impressionable 14 year old daughter could vote is well, obscene.

Question: Should the drinking age be in line with the current age of majority, 18.
