deciding whether to pursue undergrad in UCSD or in australia for postgrad in prestige US uni -Eng

Hi there

Im currently a 1st year undergrad in the university of melbourne continuing my 2nd sem doing a mechanical/ or electrical engineering degree pathway. However, i was also accepted into UCSD for this year but as an undeclared. If going to UCSD i would have to major in another area and then transfer into the school of engineering in my 2nd year.

I would complete my degree in 3years while in america i would finish in 4 years.

Another problem is that i recently contacted the mechanical engineering department and they told me for 2015 out of 120 students who applied to transfer into mechanical engineering only 50 students were accepted with an average of 3.9 GPA. Im just concerned that if i wont be accepted into the engineering department, i would have added a few more years into my degree. I completed 1 semester and recieved a 74.5% weighted average.

in australia theres not that much chance to pursue undergraduate research compared to America so that may affect my chances of getting into a good uni.

I would like to do my masters in an elite american university such as stanford or MIT.

However, the reason im wondering is whether if i pursued my undergrad in australia it would be more difficult for me to get accepted into these universities as they may discount my abilities and prefer someone who studied in the states.

cheers
