Decision date

Agreed with Techie and overachiever, Mac users boast for them not having any viruses, I’ve been using my PC for quite many years, and it hasn’t had a single virus attempt… all what I installed was ESET NOD32, and since then, it has removed every single virus attempt, even those from external USBs and stuff.

^ Ughhh I hate Windows Vista, and the crappy Windows 7.

There’s actually a very good reason to buy Macs, and it’s a reason people seldom think off. Macs hold their resale value! What does this mean? Well I bought a Macbook Pro two years ago for $1,499, I sold it last week on eBay for $1299. Lets do the math shall we? 1500-1300=200… A well built, sturdy, and fast computer cost me a mere $200 bucks. There are many explanations for Mac’s slowly degrading resale value, but the main reasons are that:

Their aluminium unibody enclouser makes them look good as new, so people aren’t afraid to buy used Macs for fear of receiving a banged up one.

Apple seldom change their computer’s design, they do so every 3-4 years. This is great because people who really don’t know squat about specs just buy the old mac because it looks just the same as the new one, only a bit cheaper.

Sure Mac’s don’t get viruses, and that’s a good thing, but it really is a crappy excuse to buy a thousand dollar computer. Especially with so many anti-virus options available. However it just makes more economical sense for me to buy a Mac, I spent a lot on it at first, but I got most of it back after intense use.

You contradicted yourself buddy… You first said, and I quote, "I’ve been using my PC for quite many years, and it hasn’t had a single virus attempt… ", but then you said “it has removed every single virus attempt, even those from external USBs and stuff”. You HAVE had attempts, various from what you’ve told us. But those attempts were failed attempts because of your anti-virus.

It’s not the same thing to say that you’ve never had a virus attack you and that you’ve had viruses attack you and fail. And while you may feel safe because of your anti-virus, you are not safe. My father recently caught a virus on his computer, and his computer had an anti-virus. Anti-viruses need to be constantly updated to keep you safe, and the updates only come once new viruses get released, and by that time some computers have already been attacked. The virus got quite a few credit card numbers, and his PayPal password as well…

While I hate to be “One of those guys” who boasts about Mac’s not getting viruses, they really don’t. And contrary to popular belief, they don’t get viruses because of the way the OS is built, not because macs aren’t “popular enough” to warrant the attention of hackers. There are currently no viruses made for Mac OS X, there are 2 or 3 spywares lurking around, but nothing as serious as a virus, and the spyware needs to ask you for permission in order to infect you. You literally have to be in imbecile, and a pirate (the mac spyware has only been seen on pirated programs) in order to get infected with spyware on a Mac.

hehe yes, i meant mac book pro ^ ^
since I’m going either into political science or business-based field, I do not need to worry about a lack of such use (since im not ever going to go near engineering) :P

Guys… everyone at Stanford has Macbook Pro’s. I’m not even exaggerating, you can come visit for yourself. If you want to stand out, you’re more than welcome to.

If you only rely on computers and clothes to stand out… you have a problem. I completely intend to stand out wherever I choose to attend. But I want to stand out with my attitude and opinions, not with things as shallow and meaningless as a computer brand or certain types of clothing…

I don’t use a macbook to show off. I use it because I genuinely feel that OS X is a superior operating system to windows.

Back to topic

Normally Stanford likes to release their decisions on Fridays and before the ivies. For the past few ears it has been right around march 25. I think that this year it will be march 25.

13 days… It’ll be nice for the ordeal to be over

@yiyopr

Are you saying that I should get a Mac because most Mac users are technologically illiterate?

@TECHIE7df,

Please elaborate. Where did I imply this? If you plan to argue that only dumb people get viruses in Windows, please don’t… Then I’ll have to write a lengthy reply in which I explain the obvious faults in your argument, and I don’t want to do that… X/

I’m implying that only dumb people buy macs :)

Amen .

enough said!

Actually the opposite can be argued. As @johannes1430 noted, statistics show that Mac users are indeed smarter than PC users, they leave a bigger internet footprint. Plus the fact that they can afford these kind of computers means that they have more disposable income, which is correlated with intelligence, although there are obvious exceptions (Paris Hilton…).

Another supporting argument is the sheer number of Mac users in college. Mac’s are wildly accepted by college students, they dominate the college student market. Macs are used among the smartest students in the nation. Here are the statistics supporting the argument:

Before you submit one-line arguments, please support them… Thanks!

I think the obvious answer is to rock a Windows MicroATX machine in your dorm and a MacBook Air out and about. You get the best of both worlds!

I think we should stick to talking about Stanford! lol

Hahaha I too vote in favor of dropping the “which OS is better” debate. Each to his own I say!

MIT’s decisions come out today, and Stanford’s is just around the corner! This is Senior Year March at its prime! I have an uncontrollable urge to cower into the fetal position as we speak. Lets see how it all plays out…

Alright people. Let’s just drop the Mac vs. PC debate, agree to disagree, and move on with our stressful lives; though I admit that such a debate took my mind off such matters for a decent amount of time. :)

Anyhow as far as the infamous Decision Date goes, I’m just going to bet my college decisions on it being March 25th.
