im going to be a senior of 2010 in hs and am wondering which of these would be the best for pre-medicine as well as engineering…rating from selectivity to how esteemed each program is…can someone help me out? The lowest price always helps too! (nj instate)
also i have visited each and liked every single one of them so “fit” is no longer a factor

bump bump bump

You’d probably get more responses on a more general forum. Most of the people on this forum would likely tell you to go to UMD. (it does have an awesome engineering program; don’t know about pre-med, but I believe there are several programs that are very well-respected. Likewise, if you post this on the forum of each of your universities listed, you’ll get votes for each one. You need to do a bit of research (maybe go visit one university so you know what questions to ask), people here will be glad to answer what they can. UMD (as, I assume all the schools on your list) has extensive information online, too.

Although it should be taken with a grain of salt, look at the USNWR rankings. Several of the universities are household names because of their sports teams, but I’m not sure if the academics holds up. For Maryland, it really does.

Also, if you’re planning to go on to grad school, most people on CC will advise you to not go deeply into debt for graduate school, which will make the schools closer to you more attractive. Some of these schools are better than other with merit aid, if you qualify, which could also be part of your decision process.

(I am curious about why LeHigh is listed…it seems to be significantly different – esp. in size and “name recognition” as the others on your list? I don’t know anything at all about the school, so it’s no comment on how it ranks up there with the others.)

Take Rutgers, they have a great med school and with Robert Wood and St Petes next to the campus, you couldn’t go wrong. Plus, Johnson and Johnson is based in New Brunswick. Pisthataway, No and So Brunswick which means you could get great health internships.

lehigh is i believe number 35 in the rankings and is near me…the problem with rut is the relatively ugly campus and the fact that many of the students at my high school will go there…any further ideas?

i am looking for not too excessive of a price (under 25000 after all aid is said and done) with an excellent atmosphere for social and learning purposes and i believe maryland is like that?

Yeah, but UMD is 10K over what you are looking for and they are very cheap on merit money.

UMiami is very good with merit, they gave him 88K over the 4 yrs.

I do agree UMD’s campus is very pretty and rutgers is ugly. As far as a lot of your hs friends going, that is true, but there are many campuses so the chance of running into them is not going to happen as often as you think. I literally grew up the town next door to Rutgers, and a lot of my class went there. It was amazing that at our 5 yr hs reunion they all met up again and had not seen them in 5 yrs even though they were all at RU

Also a 3.6 w for OOS, esp. NJ is very low for UMD, so I hope that your SAT is over 2200 to offset the gpa. DS is rooming with 2 NJ guys and both of them had a 4.1+ wgpa. Jersey is very competitive probably the most competitive OOS. They have a ton of kids applying, It could easily be renamed UMD for NJ. I believe there is a site you could go on that has scattergrams of the kids that have historically applied and the stats of those that got accepted.

All of that being said you should apply to all of them because you can’t go unless you apply, and you might get great merit money which would make it possible for you to attend your dream school.

from the scattergram at my school i am competitive at each, the question is more how do the reputations compare at the different schools for pre medicine

can anyone in the premed program say how it is for them…academically, socially;just how is the college experience for you
