Decisions Decisions...

Hello all,

im currently attending a CC here in Maryland. My ultimate goal is to graduate from University of Michigan with a M. Engineering degree. With that being said, I want to move to Michigan and attend a CC there for a year or so, so that I can get in-state tuition (if I get in). im 25 years old, and I started college late, so I can definitely handle myself away from my parents. I always paid for my own needs and most times, helped my parents with their financial needs as well.

question: My fiancé is going to be attending CIM(Cleveland Institute of Music) for her graduate degree in the upcoming fall, so I would prefer to be close to her if possible. I Honestly think that my chances for getting into UM is VERY slim…my next choice would be Case Western Reserve University (which is considerably more realistic) in which case would work out perfectly because its in Cleveland. Would choosing to go to CW instead of UM (if accepted) have a huge effect on my job outlook?

If I choose to go to CW, it would be the same situation, I would go to a CC in Cleveland for 1 year then transfer so I can get In-state tuition. I can live with her so it would save MUCHO money on my end as well.

I would look very carefully at what each state requires a student do in order to get in-state tuition. Usually, it is not just a matter of showing up and going to school for a year. Usually students are precluded from the probation period.

To answer your main question: it doesn’t matter whether it’s UM, CWR, or UMD, for that matter. It’s not where you go but what you do there. Employers and grad programs don’t give much attention to alma mater. This is even more true of engineers. Employers are looking for particular skillets, familiarity with particular technologies, experience interning, demonstrated ability to work well with a team, GPA, etc.

You could save yourself a lot of time and money and go to one of the best engineering schools in the country in College Park. Flights to OH from one of three or four local airports are not expensive.

CWRU is not a public university so in state does not matter- it will be expensive no matter what…

I think CWRU would be excellent! It is a well respected engineering school, regarded as one of the top in the country. In addition, CIM is actually on CWRU campus, so you would indeed be very close.

If Cleveland is where you want to be there is no question that Case should be highly considered…as others have said it is very highly regarded for Engineering, has affordable student housing and, as guineagirl said, you can’t get any closer to the CIM!

Oh yes, I missed that part too. Case is private, so no in-state tuition, and COA is $54 k, I believe, if I remember from my applications this past year. My brother attends CIM and I was accepted to Case, but chose not to attend (not due to money). My brother lives only a couple miles from campus.
