Yeah, decisions are supposedly going to be mailed out by late January. I don’t know, IMHO, even if they do get a record-breaking number of applicants, I still don’t see why it would take them more than an extra month to review them. I mean, from 2008 to 2009, there was also a increase in applicants by a few thousand…yet it didn’t take them THAT much longer to post decisions. Taking until February to post decisions seems a bit odd to me, especially since last year’s decisions were posted on 1/31 (unless they miraculously receive 25% more applications than last year’s class). I mean, they are getting three months as opposed two to review applications. That would mean, they are getting 1.5 times last year’s time to review only about 1.1 times the amount of applications they received last year (assuming number of applications increase by ~3,000).

But I don’t know, I could just be taking the admissions office’s work for granted. Maybe there are other factors contributing to an even greater amount of time necessary to review applications? In any case, I guess I’m just growing impatient…the wait is…agonizing. :|

As I pointed out before, I am hoping for all your sakes that they are taking the extra time to get their act together, especially more than last year. After they posted the decisions last year, it was found that there were a few computer “glitches” that kept people in limbo, or that were missed in the notification process. It is a very large and bureaucratic public university with lots of departments to get aligned. Admissions in general, special programs, LEP decisions, getting the potential candidates routed to be reviewed for merit aid, making sure that Financial aid’s systems are ready, etc, etc… I’m not making excuses, but just trying to sprinkle in a dose of reality. “Decisions will be mailed by late January” = they could drop them in the mail on January 31 and still do exactly what they said they would do all along. That all being said, I do know that the wait is agonizing…hang in there, all!

like a lot of people I’m very anxious to hear back…hopefully they will put them on line soon! I don’t think I can patiently wait much longer. haha

people keep on saying that md had a record number breaking of applicants. But i just read in the washington post that they actually had a slight drop…

Lots of clubs, Raised in Australia, NHS, Young Scholars program at CP

… given that info, I have a letter of recommendation from the Director of MTech (College Parks Technical Program). How much will this letter help me get in? Does Maryland really consider these letters much?

They do consider the letters. I sent in one from someone in the dept. of intercollegiate athletics…and I asked admissions they said they would take it into account.

From washington post website (can’t post link; you have to sign up (for free) to see…

"Only a few selective schools in the Washington region reported declines in freshman applicants. The University of Maryland predicts a slight drop, which it attributes to a change in the application process that might have deterred some students. "

^ Is it because other schools in the area (UMBC, GWU, UVA) have also reported increases? This is surprising, but then again, we all need to calm down. Maryland will be increasing its IS yield from 70% to 75%, so more IS students will be admitted. For all you OS students, tough luck…

U of Michigan had an 11/1 deadline but notified everyone applying by that date by 12/24 on a rolling basis. And from what you all say, people have already heard from other big schools, like Penn State. So, I don’t really understand why they take so long. On the other hand, I would rather wait a LITTLE while to avoid the glitches from last year, which would really drive me over the edge if I got caught in the glitch!!! But, someone said they were mailing out decisions on Saturday so I’m going to check out the mail, just in case … Silly as that is I know.

I really wish they would release decisions by 1/15 so we wouldn’t have to apply to other schools if we want to go to Maryland, which I do.

I’m an in stater so im happy that they are admitting more instate students this year…
but why would they?
wouldnt they get more money by admitting more out of state students
so that way they are raking in more OS tuition versus IS tuition?
