I have posted several threads asking for help in order to choose between Yale and MIT. Before I received my financial aid offer, I was 99.95% sure I was going to choose MIT. Right now, I have the finaid package and my self-help amounts to $5500 (as opposed to Yale’s $4400), as I knew it would before. The main problem however is that medical insurance is not included in the finaid and as a self supporting international student, I will also have to add my travel expenses to my contribution. This will mean that I will be supporting myself with $8,600 each yr all in all.
At yale on the other hand, the travel expenses and medical insurance were included on the finaid award to give the total self-help of $4400. Is it possible for the medical insurance to be waived or included as part of the financial aid award, so that I will only have to worry about the $5500 self help and my travel expense (totalling ~$7000)?
What would you do if you were in my position, considering that you’re still so much in love with MIT?
Thanks for your informed responses in advance.

I remember Daniel Barkowitz talking about insurance not being a part of the finaid award last year, but could not find a citation on his blog to point you to. And I am fairly sure that MIT will not waive the medical insurance unless you are able to certify and demonstrate that you will come with insurance that will cover everything the MIT Medical insurance would provide. I would recommend calling the Financial Aid office to ask them about options.

Thanks mootmom. This is definitely a situation.

Here’s the link for something Daniel Barkowitz posted last year about insurance.
