Decission time... UC Berkeley, Lehigh, Bucknell, Tufts...

Hi, I came to this site trying to find out what other people thought of the schools which i am considering. After browsing the forums there I found lots of different opinions on all of the schools i am interested but none comparing all of them.

So i would like some help deciding which school you think would be best, and which has the best Undergrad Engineering program as that is what I applied to for all my schools besides my Liberal Arts Colleges w/o the major.

I am into sports (lacrosse) and hope to play club where ever i go and like the idea of a medium to small sized college/ university. I was looking to do the Integrated Buisness and Engineering Program at Lehigh ), however did not get in : ( (did get into school however. I would like to combine both Buisness and Engineering where ever i choose to go.

Right now I am considering and got accpeted to Lehigh, Bucknell, UC Berkeley, <(engineering) Cal Poly San Louis Obispo (major : industrial technologies a combo buis. eng. major) and if i get in (probably wont but dont know quite yet) Pomona and Tufts.

I realize everyone thinks UC Berkeley would be the clear choice for Engineering, but i would like to stand out where ever i go and dont wonder if i wouldnt get lost in the crowd at Berkeley. How do these other schools measure up the Berkeley? Is Calpoly very good compared to the rest, the locals love it but then again thats just in California (Cali people say it has one of the best Engineering programs). I want to go where i would be most likely to get a better job after graduating. Right now I am leaning toward Bucknell because of its size, sports teams, and the fact that it looks to be good academically and be very strong in engineering.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. heres my current college list.

I got Rejected to:
Cornell
UCLA
UCSD
Claremont Mc Kenna College (ED II)

Waitlisted:
Haverford

Accepted:
Santa Clara (Honors)
Cal Poly San Louis Obispo
UCSB
UCD
UCSC (3-2 program)
UC Berkeley
Lehigh
Bucknell
Lewis and Clark
Occidental (honors)

Waiting for:
Tufts
Whitman
Reed
Pomona

sry. forgot to add that I like Liberal Arts Colleges because of the fact that you are taught by professors and its more personable. So this will probably factor into my decision. Im from California and love it but think the east coast would be a fun experience.

Cal Poly is pretty good in engineering but it’s still no Berkeley. A Berkeley engineering degree would probably give you a better chance of getting a good job than the other colleges, plus in-state = good deal. The college of engineering is pretty small compared to the entire student population, although the coursework is pretty darn tough.

4 years at Berkeley and 4 years at Bucknell would be extremely different, with vastly different weather, students, etc. Have you visited each?

Are you in the engineering or business school at Lehigh? Did you get any indication from Lehigh that you could transfer into IBE at sophmore year? I know it was possible in the past.

I’d go to Pomona if you get in, otherwise go to UCB.

Boy, I could not envision turning down Berkeley, especially at in-state prices, if you are serious about engineering. I agree with TourGuide that Bucknell & Berkeley are 100% different, and if you haven’t visited, you ought to.

I got into Engineering for all my schools including Lehigh, I am going within the next few weeks to visit all the schools i am interested, UCSB, Berkeley, Calpoly, Lehigh, Buckenell, and Haverford (got denied to to tufts so no there). I think I would enjoy the atmosphere at both Lehigh and Bucknell. I dont think as of now i would like Berkeley very much because everyone who talks about it calls it “irie” in other words a stoner school, and I just sort of like the slightly preppy scene. I am just wondering as far as education which one would give the best or what the pluses and minuses of each are if anyone knows. I would really like to get stats on where Calpoly stands nation wide because i cant seem to find them (found 2nd in west coast w/o Phd. but that was it.) I also want to be able to get classes wherever i go and dont want that to be a problem which I hear it is at both Calpoly and Berkeley.

Once you have visited you will KNOW which one you prefer!
My H and I are Bucknell grads,
(and our son was an engineering applicant last year- decided on ND)
Of course, he applied to Bucknell-
Bucknell small, quaint town-pretty campus- b-ball big sport now, not sure about club lacrosse there–Dean of Engineering is Bucknell grad FYI

But, I do know that Lehigh has club lacrosse-Hill could be an issue- Bethlehem- larger than Lewisburg, and Lehigh located closer to urban areas of Phila and NYC. Larger school-

Significant difference- Lewisburg does not have industry for internships and may not have research opportunities that Lehigh can offer.
You can find about these things when you visit.

Thanks for the advice and help. So no one thinks any of thoose schools would be a bad choice considering my other options? I guess Ill go check them all out and see which one I like best. Thanks for the help. This forum is great.

If Berkeley is in state for you, I would put it at the top of my list. UCB has Industrial Engineering and Operations research http://www.ieor.berkeley.edu/</a> and has a top 3 undergrad business program in Haas.

^^^ next mike, your right about that major with Berkeley, It was the only UC with something like it, (well besides Santa Cruz which had a 3/2 program with Berkeley), It is also the major I applied under. I think all of the schools that I mentioned as my top choices have a program like that but not the same, besides UCSB/ Haverford.

Thanks alot for the link and the info. Berkeley’s moving up my list.
