decline an early decision acceptance offer?

^^This is the most informative post I’ve read here in a long time. :)

mummom, I’m going to be nice. I thought I already explained my situation to you…but just in case.

I’m not trying to game the system.

I believe in telling the truth. Well except for the few occasions…like…if a woman asks, “Does this dress make me look fat?” Then it is ok to lie. ;)

This is post # 22. That I wrote. Tell the truth.

“Blueredbeaver…just tell Penn the truth and you will be fine.
Blueredbeaver, Calmom’s post #21 is better than mine.”

Miidmo, thanks.

1523 posts for “tell the truth.” Lesson learned.

I doubt it. ;)

Just try to think of Dstark as this guy who works with numbers all day long and is used to working around some pretty interesting financial questions. Right now he is sitting at the kitchen table trying to puzzle out a knotty educational question for some kids who don’t have as much money as some other kids.

His question right now is? Can you do this? Do you, too, have the opportunity to apply ED and maybe get the same advantage as the more financially advantaged kids who sit next to you in AP English? Hmmmm, let’s see.

That’s trully ALL that is going on here, right now, and nothing else. :)

I’m sorry, dstark, I was just about to turn this machine off, but I was wondering if you could clarify that statement? Or maybe not…I don’t seem to have much luck when asking people to clarify their statements.

That was dstark having his feeling hurt. Now he is pouting…:stuck_out_tongue:

Don’t worry, Mummom, Dstark and I have had a few go-rounds on other boards. He really is one of the best ones here. Not a bad intention…though he’d like to be much meaner than he is. :)

It’s debatable if ED is even a boost. The kids dstark knows are not legacies, obviously. So they are athletes? They are desirable URMs? What? Why is is to gosh darn important that they apply ED to schools like Penn? Why doesn’t dsark just come clean to all the chumps reading this about what he is up to? Tell the truth? Ha.

poetgrl…I really don’t care who are the nice guys, or the popular people, or the sacred cows around here. What does that have to do with anything, outside of high school, really.

I can only speak for myself when I say that what is interesting about this is that if you haven’t personally been through the financial aid catastrophe, it becomes really shocking, and you would like, like I suspect most schools would actually like, to be able to find ways to make it “work” for everyone.

Obviously this isn’t possible. But it’s sort of engrossing, as a puzzle. At least for me.

Edit: No, what I am saying is there is no “bad motive,” which is what I get the feeling you fear. I don’t care who is “popular” or whatever either. I’m just saying it’s not about gaming a system, but a financial conundrum. It’s what he does. That’s all.

You can always decline the ED offer, even if you can still afford the school. You’ll be blacklisted from every decent private school out there but what does it matter? You’ll be able to go to the state school.

Lol^^^^^^^^^

^^^yes, I rarely “stick” with threads…land and fly is more my style. But this one struck a chord. I’ve been around sometimes quietly sometime not… for a few years. None of this applies to the first 2 of my kids, they found a school, liked/loved it one went and one is on his way in the fall. But in the winter and spring and then again when the bills arrive when kids are posting I feel so sad sometimes. I’m in marketing and I write alot, generally much better than on these threads/posts, but trust me on this one I write alot of marketing and advertising and PR stuff. There is always a pile of information that you have to comb through to pick out the “stuff” you are going to say. And what you say has to align with what the business wants, there has to be a return on the investment of the “stuff” that I do. Ergo, ED with all it’s vodoo, implications that it’s the colleges secret way of getting the kids they want committed (read the rich, the athletes, etc.) that there is this undergroud of parents and kids gone wild trying to figure out the most strategic plan to triumph in ED just hit me. I could not believe that colleges would really hold families feet to the coals and force them to abide by an agreement that didn’t include financial renumeration, I couldn’t believe that people would actually strategize some grand schemes and everything else that has been torn apart on this thread. So I stuck around to see what people knew about the ED process (people that are wiser than I) and observe the “pull it apart” analytically because I know that nothing is at face value. Because I’m the one that “makes” the face value for a job. So yes, you might find us painfully analytical or half dozen other wonderful adjectives, but those that have “hung in” to the end do care.

Oh yes, DS, what is the dress code again for that Christmas dinner? I forgot if I can wear my UT hat with that Cal shirt you sent me? ;)

PS I am not sure what this was all about, but I thought it was funny. And, fwiw and for people who do not know, over many years, I have had multiple exchanges with Dstark with plenty of agreements and plenty of disagreements. I also have plenty of marks from all those times he yanked my chain with glee.

All in all, what a forum such as CC should offer to everyone.

Good night Chet…Good night David.

“Tell the truth? Ha.”

Ok, I admit it, I’m naive about believing what others say, unless given a reason to doubt it.

dstark, xiggi, can my neighbor vballmom and I crash that Christmas party? Then there’s New Year’s Eve… :)

Thank you Sybbie for sharing this information

It is in line with what the GC’s at the school I work at told me and what I reported here. Alas, some naysayers on here (the unethical ones who have no problem advising a student do whatever and back out of an ED agreement) said my GCs had no idea what they were talking about. They felt they knew more than the proffesionals in the filed - and one of them even posted that what I said wasn’t really going on in my school - and then they went on to say this is what is really happening. Amazing that some total faceless stranger thought they knew more about my school than I do from both working here and having a child attending.

thank you for affirming the process, the upfront discussion and the impact of reneging on such an agreement on more than just the student (ie on the GC and the student’s school)

JHS

Excellent post and data. It affirms what I have reported here about Penn’s FA levels and what has occurred at my school as well. I do not see how anyone can continue to argue its fine for the OP to leave her MIT EA app alive given her Penn ED acceptance, especially since what we know about Penn’s FA awards are that they are extremely fair

Xiggi, you’re a great poster. And you’re a smart guy. I enjoy chatting with you on this board…even when you trash my old school.

Well… except for the time you pointed out I didn’t understand that ACT math problem. :)

And I agree with most of what you have said on this thread.

And Poetgrl…she has an advantage…:)… and I usually agree with her posts everywhere…except when she doesn’t show patience. :).

Momofthreeboys, love your posts. I hope I’m not getting tricked by your marketing and end up buying one of your products. :)

And there is calmom, CRD, vossron, Marite…most of the time…and posters I don’t see as much anymore like Kluge and Mini and that aren’t in this thread… I’m sure I am leaving some posters out. Great posters all. And I learn a lot from them.

Anyway, I am shocked by the lack of transparency…not that much in ED…but in the financial aid system. Sybbie’s links just confirm to me how messed up for the consumer the fin aid system is.

anneroku

Oh please - you have got to be kidding me. And just who do you expect to pay?
