Decline an offer to go to graduate school?

I got a job offer from a firm that I truly want to work for, but now since I was admitted to a graduate school I’m more inclined to get my master’s degree before start working. The program is only one year and would make me more valuable as a candidate. If I decline the job offer and then apply for the same position next year will it hurt me?

Thanks.

First find out if the company you have an offer from is willing to send you for a Masters and pay some of the cost. Thos would allow you to not only have the job you want but not go further into debt for the Masters. Many companies will support further education by their employees and it helps them advance within the company.

If you choose to go for grad school now, don’t burn any bridges when you decline the offer and try to stay in touch with your contacts during your studies to maximize your chances of employment.

It’s easier (and cheaper) to start working and pursue graduate work part-time; many employers reimburse for earning a work-related degree. There are benefits from being able to apply work experience to class work and visa-versa. Disadvantages: it takes longer, you are limited to the locally available degree programs, forget about a social life to a great extent while working and in school, and you are adding a credential (experienced worker with a Masters) vs. being able to enter market with a Masters (if graduating from a top school in the field). I went the night route for MBA and MS, knowing I was improving long-term employability in my industry vs. positioning myself for a major career change.

You got an offer from a firm you really want to work for? You want to get a masters because you think it will make you more valuable to said employer.

…chances are what you learn on the job during the next year will make you much more valuable to your employer and the market than a graduate degree AND no more school. But that’s my view.

If you have a job at the place that you want to work, why would you turn it down for a degree? The point of getting degrees is so you can get a job.

Take the job, and go to school part time.

Or, you can ask the company if they would offer you the position for the following year.
