Declining Grades Always Bad?

Hi
I am a sophmore at UNC and applying to the b-school at my university. And I had an awful semester! I ended up getting 3 C’s and 2 B’s. THe past two semesters, I have done fairly well. But this semester killed me…partly b/c I had to work a full-time job and partly b/c my classes were really hard.

Anyways, My culmulative GPA fell from about a 3.5 to a 3.004 (I know Ouch!) and well I was wondering if you guys think they would take this one semester and think I am not qualified enough. I feel I am qualified because I have worked and maintained average grades with harder classes then most of the applicants typically take like (calc 3 and chinese). However, on their website they say “grade trends” are a big influence.
Obviously with harder classes and doing a job ,My GPA would fall…so Does that basically mean I am out of the running and should just consider a new major this break.
I feel like my essays, cover letter, and resume were really well-written but I feel like this one semester basically ended it all.

Any thoughts? I know I am rambling on and on and this thread probably makes no sense But I really want to do business at UNC (the main reason I chose to attend) and If I can’t…that really sucks :(

I’ll bump it because you have a situation that needs an answer. Sorry I can’t answer because I honestly don’t know.

You are a student at the school so you should be referring your question to your class dean, your advisor, dean at the business school or the admissions department at the buisness school because they are in the best position to answer this question.

If every one who is intered in the B-school must apply sophmore year for admission, there is probably going to be a straigh forward process because there wil be more applicants than openings in the b-school.

If they say that grade trends is a big influence, believe it because if nothing else it willbe the one objective criterial to determine admission because your GAP is what it is.

You have probably read the FAQ’s and the answers for the program but here they are again:

http://www.kenan-flagler.unc.edu/Programs/BSBA/faq.cfm#eight

the sad truth is that some one with a higher GPA can and probably will knock you out of the box

as a general rule, declining grades are not good. But, it also depends on what your C’s are in…a C in The Physics of Black Holes would not be perceived in the same light as a C in Accounting 1 or Econ 1 – both classes looked favorably upon by Biz schools.

You have a few positives in your situation:

1) Carolina likes to keep its students in the Tar Heel family, so KF is a little more flexible for a current family member than they would be for someone with your situation coming from Durham.

2) Working full time while attending a great Uni is difficult…it’s not like you were partying the semester away. Hopefully, your advisor or recommender can address your financial/family situation and need to work. It may not completely offset a C, but it could sure help.

As sybbie notes, since you are in CH, make an appt at the school, and go visit the Chair of the department you are considering (marketing, accounting, etc), and speak with them personally.

Good luck.

Harrypotter, thanks for bumping my post, I really appreciate it! And thanks for the info Sybbie719

Yeah I realize that since there are a lot of applicants they will probably just go for the GPA. They sent out in email saying around 500 applied and 350 will get in.
But that really really sucks, Its the worst feeling to know I was so close and then just bombed it this semester. Especially since I did not have to take Calc 3, I thought I would be minoring in Math but that was such a tough class (especially since I had no idea what the teacher said 99% of the time…haha)

I asked my advisor, but she really couldn’t help. She just told me that she doesn’t know and that the admissions commitee only knew. She just told me the average was a 3.4 but she said that someone got rejected last year with a 3.8 and someone with like a 2.9 got in. So I guess there is some hope. On the website they “claim” that they evaluate all applications on everything and not just GPA. And I am pretty confident in all my other areas, I am pretty involved and I work (so my resume was really strong), my two essays were nice, and then in my cover letter I explained about my grades. They say they liked a strong background in math (so maybe they will take that into consideration since I got in A in Calc 2 which is supposedly the most failed class here)…but I guess there is no way to know…and I’ll just wait.

Haha, you called me harrypotter. Finally, somebody got it! :p

Anyway, don’t lose your hope. Good luck!
