Defenition of Diversity

When I do apply to Rice (along with Purdue, Villanova, Vanderbilt, and University of Memphis), I will probably be “average” at best. I am hoping that my MCJROTC experience and interest in the NROTC program at Rice will be a big help, because I don’t do much outside of JROTC program. I am on the marksmanship team, physical fitness team, and drill team. Next year I will be the Batallion Commanding Officer (highest billet in program). I will also be attending the National Student Leadership conference is Washington D.C. over the summer. Getting to the point, is Rice interested in a student that has been recognized as an outstanding leader, but average student? When I say average student…

3.75 unweighted GPA (no weighted)
No Varsity sport, even though the JROTC “Raider” team has very high physical standards
Highest math will probably be Pre-Calculus, maybe Trig
Not too many AP’s
Intending History Major

I was also wondering how many people from Tennessee, specefically the Nashville area becuase of close by Vanderbilt, attend Rice.

Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer.

As a history major, you’re probably not expected to be in multi-variable calculus or anything like that. I think pre-cal is fine as long as you did well in it. And my unweighted GPA was 3.74 when I applied to Rice (though this was a result of hard engineering classes and slacking off freshman year).
Your dedication to these ROTC programs (which I know nothing about) could make a nice resume and some interesting essays, IMO.
