Deferral Reversal Idea!

I was deferred ED from University of Pennsylvania-Wharton. I recently spoke with my regional rep, you basically recalled my app from memory, and she gave me some hope, in general she told me to send another essay and told me to not worry about the rest of my app because it was very strong. She said my essays were memorable and that my “Why Penn” essay should be sent in the present instead of the future like I did. She noted the creativity, but said I should send a new one so she has ammunition in the RD round.

Here’s my idea:

One of my friends suggested a crazy idea only specific to me and my app. My last name is “Hummel” and there are figurines made by Hummel. I was thinking I could send a Scholarly looking Hummel Figurine to the Admissions Office with a note attached,

"Congratulations, you have received Hummel #{insert actual number}, (insert Hummel name), for no additional charge, For a limited time, you can receive a limited addition hummel #{insert SS#}.

So far, the people I have asked thought It was an excellent idea except for my English teacher, he thought it could be seen as bribery since the Hummel figurine is worth ~$500.

Idea #2:

Maybe I could talk of the great business skills of the Hummels, Hummel figurines corporation, Johann Hummel and his music, Hummel Clothing line from Europe, and say they can expect equally great things from me?

I think I might just put a lot of effort into my essay instead of relying on a risky gimmick such as sending a Hummel figurine, instead tie into my essay about how many Hummels are successful (figurines, clothing line, musician)?

Conclusions:

I really want to send the figurine as a gimmick, “It is important to have a Hummel on campus, but wouldn’t you rather have the real thing?” I know this would be original. Secondly, I could write an essay(either way I will) tying in the success of the name Hummel and how I will follow the trend of my surname.

If you have any questions or suggestions, it would be excellent!

I like this a lot better than than the famous Hummels through time.

I was thinking incorporating that into an essay and sending a Hummel with that quote as a tag

if you can find an inexpensive (as in less than $20 or so) hummel figure then send it, or make a faux one and send it. The idea is cute, but sending something expensive (worth more than $25 or so) is going to be offensive.

really, though, the adcom has told you what to do. Write a new essay and submit it. I don’t know why you’re avoiding this.

From what I’ve read most adcoms really discourage sending cutty witty stuff like that. People who have sent balloons with their apps with notes like “I hope my application will float to the top” or doodling on the side of their essays to show that they are artistic usually fail. The fact is, (especially when applying to an ivy league school like Penn) they’re largely admitting you based on what you have done with your life during the past 4 years. The only conceivable reason I imagine why anyone would put something like that in your application would be to make it stand out, and it sounds like that wasn’t a problem for you. Do what the admissions rep asked for, send an extra essay, make it good, write about the Hummel thing or whatever, but shy away from sending any gimmicks.

Thanks, You guys have a totally different view than the Penn forum

…bump
