I know we have to send in the mid-year report, but what else? I am planning on writing more on why I “fit” CALS, but should I send other things as well? How much is too much?
I want to impress them, not annoy them.

A letter of interest is a great way to go. If you’ve received awards or made any other achievements since submitting your application, you’ll also want to make the committee aware of that. For those involved in any kind of research…send in an abstract if you got a recent publication.

I also know that some people had an additional letter of recommendation mailed in that says something the other letters did not.

I’ve had a few posters who were deferred PM me with this question and this is pretty much the same advice I gave them.

I haven’t really gotten any major awards as of late… so I’m just going to write them a letter about how my extracurriculars specifically tie into the HumEc mission.

dewdrop: When should I send this letter? I’ve heard that later in January is better?

Yeah…I think late January would be a good time. If you wait longer than that…there’s a chance your app might have already been reviewed.

Our guru CayugaRed might also have some advice on the timing :-)

ILR alumni uncle offered to send in a letter for me stating why he thinks i have a good fit. Im also sending a letter of intent as well as an update on my senior year doings. I dual-enroll at Pace U. so Im sending my A’s from that and I’ll probobly do a bit of a write up on my concluding thoughts now that my internship is coming to an end.

cheers,
Mike

I created the swim team at my school, and this is the first year for my school to participate in swimming competition (our school was established in 1924). I asked my swim team sponsor teacher to emphasize my passion for whatever I choose to do and my ability to mobilize the community and to really encourage first-time athletes to come out and show what they’ve got. She said that I plan to fundraise to get every single swim team member a school swim cap to promote school spirit and identity, as well as other amazing projects I plan to do. She also mentioned my ability to make quick impact. I just transferred to my current school last year for the I.B. Diploma. I was able to quickly found the swim team and coordinated with teachers.

I wrote a letter containing a list of updates to the admission committee. For me, I can email my update to I think international@cornell.edu or something, and the admission officer said the adcoms will link the email I already sent to my application.

I have already sent in my update because I heard that Stanford will begin evaluating its applicants on January 10th. (It’ll probably be later for Cornell because Stanford does not conduct interview for most applicants.)

I’m going to mention that I worked a few days of break at my summer job and how it reinforced my conviction that Cornell is the perfect fit for me.

I called CALS today and asked them about my deferral and if there were any notes on my app. I also asked them what types of things they would like to see from us. They were nice, but did not give any info on why I was deferred. They stated that THE ONLY thing they wanted sent in was the mid-year report and “if you have something to add to your essay”. Now I am conflicted. Should I follow these instructions or send in some of the other things people have recommended?

Hmm, maybe you should ask your GC to call while you’re in the room with him/her: that’s what I did and I actually got a straight answer about why I was deferred (this was for HumEc, not CALS).

I’m going to send in a letter of interest (which is going to add on to my essay) in a week or two and then send in my midyear report.

Good luck SVM, I’ve pretty much lost my confidence from the deferral… I truly don’t believe I’ll get into any schools like Cornell.

Hang in there ChandlerBing! I remember your stats, they were great!!! You also have so much passion for Cornell! I did get into U. of Michigan, but Cornell is still my dream!
