Deferred - Demonstrated interest or weak stats?

hi, I’m a senior from North Carolina.
I am currently enrolled at East Chapel Hill High school, the top public school in the state.
AS far as stats, i have 4.95 weighted, 3.75 unweighted, 16 honors, 8 APs and two standard (gym and lab tech).
I got a 1500 on the SAT; 780 math; 720 reading (took it once)
I got a 33 ACT; 36 science, 34 reading, 31 writing, 31 math
As far as extracurriculars, I play varsity football, varsity tennis and I am a co-chair of the entertainment committee for project graduation at my high school. In addition, I have had a nearly full time job (30-35 hrs a week) in the summer.

Do you guys attribute the deferral to an amazing applicant pool and bad luck on my part, or to a lack of demonstrated interest. I am interested in the school, but New Orleans was a big trip to make to visit the school and I spent the summer working and visiting schools up north.

My other schools on my list include: Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Trinity at University of Toronto, Emory, Lehigh, William and Mary.

you can show interest in multiple ways (emailing your admission counselor, signing up for the mailing list, etc.). visiting the campus isn’t the only way to show the school you want to attend. however, your stats are pretty good, and you may have been deferred because of it. if you haven’t shown interest, they may be afraid you’re using them as a safety net. if you still want to attend, follow up with your admission counselor with any updates you have, any questions that aren’t already answered on their website, etc. come march, I think you’ll be admitted, but you never know.

Thanks for responding. I never emailed them before. I was planning on applying, and then finding out more before making my decision. After the deferral, i contacted them and my regional counselor to let them know i was interested.
