Deferred & e-mailed AC - no response yet

Just looking for your experienced thoughts. D was deferred SCEA. Two (or three) days later, she e-mailed her AC with some questions. She has not heard back. Earlier in the fall she did exchange e-mail with this same AC with other questions.

Do you think:

 1. The ACs are on break and may not be around to respond and therefore D should just wait for response from e-mail
 2. She should be re-e-mailing to elicit response
 3. Calling the AC
 4. Should she assume that her questions are ones that will not be answered and should just drop the whole topic
 5. Involve her GC to contact AC

And yes, I know that I should not call or write. :)

what were her questions?? I emailed my admissions officer on new years day (so he was on break) and he still responded by the end of the day. Or maybe you live in a region with many Yale applicants with many questions. Your D could call the admissions officer. Even though some may disagree with me, I think that it’s better to contact your admissions officer regardless of the fact that some may perceive that as “repetitive and annoying.”

To get the exact questions, I would have to access her e-mail account. The gist, as I recall, had to do with additional materials that should or should not be provided as a deferred applicant. We are from the NE which does tend to be a popular part of the country.

She is currently off ski coaching so she is not home until later.

Were your questions to your AC of a similar nature?

The Admissions people are inundated with e-mails at this time of the year, and it’s no surprise that a few get lost. I suggest that your D forward her original e-mail to the Regional Rep with a header saying that she’s re-sending it and that she understands that it probably went astray in the deluge of last-minute application materials. It’s not Yale’s style to ignore applicants’ questions.

I’m actually applying RD, but I had to contact my admissions officer about corrections in my application. Last year, one of my relatives was deferred scea but constantly contacted her admissions officer by both mail and phone. I thought she was being obsessive and annoying because she would frequently contact the officer, but apparently worked!! However, I don’t think she asked why she was deferred and I don’t think she sent in additional materials…

I do not recommend obsessive and annoying contact just to “show interest.” If you have a legitimate question that can’t be answered by referring to the Yale website or course catalogue, it’s fine to contact your regional rep via e-mail. If your cousin was accepted last year, it’s probably despite her frequent communication with the rep, not because of it!

Oookay sorry I think I caused misunderstanding…she had legitimate questions, but at different times. I personally thought it was annoying, but they were specific questions.

D’s questions have always been specific. Both those in the October e-mail and December’s, I will have her get onto it when we get back home tomorrow. That way the e-mail should be there for Monday morning. Thanks for the advice.

Thought I would provide an update. D did send another e-mail with a header indicating that it was a re-send, etc. (like wjb suggested). The AC responded the same day so that is all taken care of. Thanks for the help.

Glad it worked out, smoda.

smoda- my son had the same experience- I wonder if he should re-send. He asked about supplemental materials as well and heard nothing back. He waited a week after decisions before he sent his email. I guess he could just re-send as well. My son asked several questions in regards to what type of additional information would be helpful. He is just going to have a senior year teacher write a rec(his area of major and best class) and send an updated resume with the midyear report, I guess.

I sent you a PM w/ actual response

In general, D was told no to additional recommendations. Updated resume is nice. We did not think of that.

I’m glad everything worked out, smoda. :)

But did the regional rep really say no to additional recs? I was planning to send one from my coach soon and email my rep to let her know it’s coming. Is that ok? I asked my college GC and he said it would be fine…

Also, the updated resume is a good idea 2by2. So it’s ok to send one with the midyear report?

This is a cut and paste from the e-mail D received from her AC:

“It is not necessary to send additional recommendations, as we rely on the primary academic letters.”
