I always assumed that if you are deferred ED/EA that your application was automatically put in the RD pool. From recent posts here on CC it appears that some colleges give the applicant the option to be considered for RD or to withdraw their application. Is this a common practice?
My kid was deferred in the EA round. He had to tell them he wanted to be considered RD. This was in 2003.
Interesting! So it might be a way to weed out those who were using the college as a “safety”, at least for EA applicants, thus increasing yield.
@TomSrOfBoston which schools are doing this?
In 2003, my son got deferred at UMD-CP. he had to send them a postcard (this was before everything was done online) to be considered RD.
Oddly, he was eventually denied admission…which was very strange given his stats at the time. But it didn’t matter…he had decided to matriculate to Boston University.
If I had known that I definitely could’ve withdrawn a deferred application, I definitely would’ve for Binghamton two years ago. I was literally talking about it with my parents the day after, but they told me to just let them get back to me. I was eventually denied. I even regret applying.
