Nice recs, I hope…

Background: Asian (duh??) – Chinese, lived in Brazil for 9 years, been in US for 4 and a half years… Totally a fob… (wish I was Hispanic!)
Essay Comm App: How I suffered discrimination in Brazil and overcame it. I thought it was pretty good…
Current Status: Accepted into JHU ED but deferred for their BME (biomedical engineering) major =(
Backdoor plan: UT since I’m top 10% … coz my mom won’t pay for me to go to JHU if I don’t get in BME… actually she won’t pay for school that are matched for me coz she thinks either I get into really good ivies or I go to UT for less $$…

Oh my course load is the hardest in my School… My school is one of the best ones in Texas but I’m afraid Johns Hopkins doesn’t know it well enough… will have taken 6 IBs and 14 APs by graduation… The only one that took all the AP 3 sciences in my school, the hardest course load than everyone else… My heart hurts soo much… This is soooo sad… I drove like 2 days to go to JHU’s open house… =(

no one to read my stats? sad… do u think that if i get a research job (somehow starting now!!!) and get a rec from a doctor/mentor i can get in RD? my mom is a PA and works in Texas Heart… maybe she can help me??? what else do i need? I thought my stats were good but i guess they r not… totally caught me unprepared and now i’m trying to fit 5 schools on my application list… =(

jeebus -_-

lol sorry to hear that michelle, but uh…why dont u apply to another school thats also good in bme? and why dont u apply to ivy leagues like ur mom thinks…maybe u’ll get in. just uh…calm down

oh and i read ur stats, theyre great, but i think people didnt refer to them cause ur complaining too much. sorry if i sound mean, but just calm down a lil. if ur this freaked out about not getting into BME, if u DO get into bme (sometime later) and if u fail something , u might just do something stupid, so take a deeppppp breathe and knwo there are more BME programs out there other than jhu

i’d be happy to get into hopkins bio but i got deferred… i have very similar stats as you but i got a couple more ec’s & leadership position but thats about it…

Coz my best friend got in ED to JHU (normal - nonBME) and we were going to be roomates together… and also coz I luv JHU and the campus is amazing! I also applied to Duke and Case Western Reserve… And because JHU is sooo great in Medicine and Research… And coz I’m asian…

take heart. at least you weren’t rejected. appreciate it, because rejectees (not necessarily from JHU, but a reject the same) don’t even have a chance.

relax. based on your stats, we know you’re smart. you’ll be successful in whatever you do if you keep at it. if you can’t get in this time around, you have another chance. Then you can go to JHU and show your great academics. either way, you’ll get in BME.

My mom is making my life miserable but at least one good thing that came out of the 30 discussions we’ve had today was that she’s paying for college counseling… so maybe I still have a chance???

wat is college counseling. geesh u know what michelle, u have alot better life than most other people, u got into hopkins, its not like u even got rejected. everyone else is being nice becuase they dont wanna be mean and hurt ur feelings, but ur just ungrateful for what u already have.

whoa this board is gettin nasty…

okie i keep my mouth SHUT :x

Getting into JHU w/o BME doesn’t mean anything at all because I won’t be able to go. You already got in, it’s not like you have anything to worry about… While other people have to struggle thinking of strategies to get in! I worked hard to get into a good college, I know people who worked half as much as I did and they are happy because they’ve met their parents and their own expectations… but I’m not…

I don’t think anyone here is trying to be mean or unwilling to help you dxmichelle. The thing is, how exactly are we supposed to respond to messages involving you getting professional college counseling?

As for your dilemma, it just seems a bit melodramatic. Why don’t you just beg and plea with your mom, telling her that JHU REALLY is a good school and that many people are envious of your position at this point. If that doesn’t work, you might want to talk to your counselor and ask how you can pay for college on your own because your mom
s u c k s. And if that doesn’t work…just go to your father and say "Daddy, princess wants to go to JHU for college blinks and smiles angelically. "

I bet that gets them everytime ;)

sigh…well i guess this is what this forum is for, helping each other as a community. michelle, ur not any worse than me, or anyone else, because you ALSO got into JHU. instead of focusing on the fact that u didnt get into bme, why dont u rejoice over the fact that you got into jhu? and umm theres something called INDEPENDENCE, meaning u go to college and take up loans or get a job to pay for ur own college tuition. haha im poor so i dont have my mommy payin college for me, i’ll hav eto work for it, but good thing is that im SO poor they give me all the money HAHAHHA! ahem my point is, quit complaining…please…

Question:

If you apply BME, with a back-up major, can you be rejected BME but accepted?

Is it common, or should I just not apply to BME?

Yes! they give you admission to the college 1st (I think) and then if you apply for BME they look at your application. So even if you don’t get into BME you can get accepted to the university. Yeah, my parents kinda earn a lot of money, so I’m not gonna get any financial aid anyways…

it doesnt hurt to apply to BME, its whether they accept u or not, no hurt in trying :)
