<p>I was recently deferred from upenn early decision I originally planned to apply to emory for early decision II if i was rejected but i never had a plan for if i was deferred. MY dilema: if i apply to emory early decision II and get in then i’ll never know if i could have gotten into upenn and i love upenn. Also upenn for me is free cuz my parents work there. The chances of getting into upenn once deferred is 15% and reg is 21%. I dont think i could get into emory reg and the chances of getting early is 60% while reg is 40%. what should i do apply to emory early decision or wait…</p>
<p>Without a good safety, one that you feel sure you’d get in and could afford, and that you would truly enjoy attending, neither plan is worth pursuing.</p>
<p>The safety is ALWAYS the most important school on your list.</p>
<p>i am applying to 10 other schools. It’s just a matter of if i am going to apply early decision to emory or just apply there reg decision.</p>
<p>First off, mini is correct about having a safety or two. </p>
<p>Second, see if your GC can ferret out the reason that you were deferred. It might be the SAT’s, it might be something else.</p>
<p>If you know what you want to major in, and if one of your folks knows the department chair or someone with a little clought, they might be able to put in a word for you; You are not the only good mathematician to be caught up by SAT I math. Whether this does any good depends on how things are done at UPenn (which I don’t know) as well as how strong the rest of your app is. </p>
<p>Of course, you will want to follow up with showing continued interest, providing updates, and so on.</p>
<p>Would you be truly happy at one of your safeties? If yes, I’d wait - it is Penn you really want to go to, not Emory, right?</p>
<p>I think both emory and upenn are reaches for me. I like both schools very much but upenn would be better b/c the tuition would be free for me. i’m defintally applying to these schools reg decision tufts, notre dame, carnegie, u michigan, lehigh, boston college, and i’m already accepted into penn state</p>
<p>Several points - if you haven’t already, make sure you get your application into Michigan pronto. They are rolling admissions and things become tougher as the season goes on — they’ve been taking and accepting people since October (ignore all this if you already have it in - in that case, you should be hearing soon).</p>
<p>You already have a safety - Penn State. Assuming that you would be HAPPY to go there, no need for another safety. All of the schools on your list are pretty competitive, however, so if you aren’t sure you want to go to Penn State, consider adding another safety. And, I don’t think it’s a problem to apply EDII to Emory so long as you are OK with giving up the dream of UPenn if you get in. To be honest, if your parents work at UPenn and you were deferred, the deferral may be a polite way of the school letting you down without out right rejecting you in the ED round. </p>
<p>Finally, do your parents qualify for any tuition exchange program with other schools as employees at Penn?</p>
<p>i get a 18,000 grant at other universities. I asked upenn if my parents working there helps me get in and they said no. I asked three different admissions officers. My parents research in the medical school so i dont really have any connections to upenn that might help me. My only dilema right now is i want to apply to emory early decision II or reg</p>
<p>If you just marginally prefer Emory to the other schools on your list and would feel badly about not taking another shot at Penn, I would put Emory (and Penn) in the RD column. </p>
<p>If you like Emory way better than the other schools on your list (except Penn, of course) and you have a reasonable shot at Emory, you could go ED II there.</p>
<p>Posting your stats and activity profile may get you some good input on your chances at Penn RD and Emory RD and EDII.</p>
<p>This is the sort of dilemma that arises when you use ED as strategy rather than as the pure and simple way of matching up with your top choice school. And it is a decision you have to make. If you are talking about upping your chances without regard to personal preferences, I would venture to say (taking you at your word, without seeing your profile) that statistically you are much better off applying to Emory. If you are a long shot at Emory for regular decision, it is doubtful that you are going to get into Penn is my opinion. That is assuming you have a good handle of the situation and are reporting things accurately.</p>

i really do like emory cuz of its math and premed program, 3 hospitals/research facilities, good acadmic/social balance, its gorgeous and warm
i dont know if i could get into emory w/ out the early decision b/c by applying early chances increase by 20%. admission to upenn is doubtful cuz they accept 15% of deferred.</p>
<p>I would be very surprised if you got into Penn RD. So, if you really like Emory over and above your other schools, I’d try it ED II. Otherwise, toss all your apps in RD and see what happens.</p>
