@scubadiverman Nope
@scubadiverman i dont expect to receive any decision before April because as i know applicants who receive the bad letter usually have a less competitive score. I guess i’ll be placed on the WL.
So if my “View Decision” is still there at this point I’m not getting in tonight
Even though the deferral letters are inconclusive, there actually seems to be a correlation between LOCI replies and final decision. I analyzed the 2019 and 2020 deferral threads, and people who were told they were a “very strong candidate for consideration” were much more likely to be accepted. I analyzed a bunch of other small variations in wording, and I almost think I can assign each LOCI reply to an application rating that UMich publishes on their website: outstanding, excellent, good, fair, or poor.
Here’s what I think I found.
Outstanding applications:
• Accepted Early February
• “Admission was very competitive, so we were unable to admit all academically excellent applicants”
• The letter doesn’t mention needing to evaluate applicant against strength of RD pool, implying they may be accepted very soon
• It doesn’t tell the student to look into other options
Excellent applications:
• Usually accepted early Feb-Early March, but some are probably waitlisted or rejected
• “Admission was very competitive, so we were unable to admit all academically excellent applicants”
• Mentions evaluating strength of RD pool before making final decision
• Say student is a very strong candidate, but tells student to look into other options if not admitted, preparing for small chance of waitlist/reject
Good applications:
• Accepted Late March, or maybe waitlisted or rejected later
• “Admission was very competitive, so we were unable to admit all academically qualified applicants”
• Mentions evaluating strength of RD pool before making final decision
• Say student is strong candidate (not very strong), but to look into other options
Fair/Average and Poor/Below Average applications:
• Waitlisted or rejected
• “Admission was very competitive" no mention of applicant being qualified
• Mentions evaluating strength of RD pool before making final decision
• No “strong candidate”, just says look into other options
What do you guys think of this? It’s probably clear that I did a lot of lurking before I finally made a CC account, but I wanted to share my theory now to see if it could help others who were deferred. If anything here is unclear, definitely let me know and I’ll try to clear it up!
@APJunkie24 Should you deserve acceptance letter.
I would say that looks accurate @APJunkie24 . In your expert opinion, is there any point in staying up admissions if our view decision link is still there?
@schoolistoohard I think it’s extremely unlikely that you’ll get a decision, but I know that if I were in your position, I would probably stay up just due to the small possibility. It’s just a bit less than an hour; you can do it
@schoolistoohard I don’t think so
@APJunkie24 I might as well! Good luck to you if you are still waiting
Wait so decisions possibly come out soon?
@schoolistoohard Thank you! I never had a view decision link in the first place, so I’m kind of doomed to stay up every Wednesday night until I get a decision
And some may come out tonight, because a couple people’s view decision links disappeared this afternoon.
@APJunkie24 Oh my portal has ‘view decision link’ rn so I may go to sleep lol good luck to you!
@APJunkie24 did you apply RD?
@APJunkie24 So in you (expert) opinion, where does my LoCI response fall?
"Hello (Me),
We are sorry that you didn’t receive the decision you were hoping for from the University of Michigan. The University received a record breaking 32,500 early action freshmen applications this year, so admission was very competitive. Before we can make a final decision on your application we need to further evaluate the strength of the regular decision applicants, as well as the yield rate of our admitted students to determine if we have space for you in the freshman class. Thank you for letting us know about your continued interest in Michigan and please know that we will note that interest in your application. Please also make sure that you have your 7th semester grades sent to Michigan once those are available.
As stated in your deferral letter, we will have a final admissions decision for you by early April and appreciate your patience as you await a final decision. Again, admission to the University of Michigan is the most competitive it has ever been this year, so although I encourage all deferred students to keep the University of Michigan as an option, I would also encourage you to explore the other opportunities available to you.
Please feel free to contact me or Anthony if you have any additional questions or concerns.
Have a great holiday break!
Best,
(Admissions Officer)"
And then I sent a second email about a week and a half ago and got
"Hello (me),
Thank you for your email. Your strong interest has been noted in the evaluation of your application. All students will hear back with a decision by mid-late April.
Have a wonderful day!
Best,
(Admissions Officer)"
So is that good or bad or somewhere in the middle?
@Holasenior2017 You too! May the odds be ever in our favor
hey what are everyones stats just so the people who are still waiting can see when you guys get in
3.8 GPA 32 ACT
4.28 W 3.88 UW GPA
33 ACT
@jeepcherokee I applied EA and got the “bad” deferral letter. Apparently nobody with that letter got a View Decision Link.
@UofMorMSU The first letter, a version of the standard letter, doesn’t look that good, but I’m not sure about the 2nd letter. If your 7th semester grades were good and/or you retook the ACT or something your chances might improve, but, like the letter said, you should probably explore the other opportunities available to you.
My stats:
4.0 UW 4.2 W 35 ACT
