Deferred U Mich Ann Arbor Class of 2021

@uofmkatedeferred99 Don’t read too much into the posts of others. I got my MBA from Michigan over 25 years ago (yikes) and one of the strengths of the university is the combo of in state and out of state students. Coming from New England, it was just a blast to be around homes that “bleed maize and blue”. To be honest, I was jealous that my state didn’t have a kickass public university like Michigan.

To the rest of you, keep in mind it isn’t just numbers. Most schools (Michigan for sure) wants to see good numbers but more than that they want to see character and passion. And in the end, a little luck comes into play. So celebrate your successes, celebrate the successes of others, and darn it be nice! :slight_smile:

Response to LOCI:

On behalf of our Director Erica Sanders and myself, I thank you for your continued interest in the University of Michigan. Please be assured that it will be noted in my evaluation of your application. The University of Michigan received a record breaking 32,500 early action applications this year and admission was very competitive. Unfortunately, your test score and grades made you less competitive than our top candidates–last year’s average for our admitted class was a 3.87 unweighted GPA and a 30-34 ACT. Before we can make a final decision on your application we need to further evaluate the strength of the regular decision applicants, as well as the yield rate of our admitted students to determine if we have space for you in the freshman class.

Please submit your 1st semester senior year grades so they can be considered as we continue to assess your application; other than that there is nothing further we need from you at this time. As stated in your deferral letter, we will have a final admissions decision for you in early April. As I mentioned earlier, admission to the University of Michigan is the most competitive it has ever been this year, so although I encourage all deferred students to keep the University of Michigan as an option, I would also recommend you to explore the other opportunities available to you.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions or concerns.

So I asked my high school counselor about the LOCI and he suggested I just call my regional counselor. So I did, she didn’t answer but I left a message stating my desire to go there. How I will attend if admitted and my legacy status. She replied with an email stating "Hello Alexander,

Thank you for contacting me and for your continued interest in the University of Michigan. Please be assured that it will be noted in my evaluation of your application. Your mid-year grades will also be taken into consideration as we continue to assess your candidacy for admission." So I don’t really know what to think.

Has anyone been admitted with the “bad” letter?

@uofmkatedeferred99 please do not take offense. I actually didn’t think to apply to Michigan. It was my parents who said do the research, take a look and I did. I am OOS. I have worked very hard for my grades really not knowing where I wanted to go to college so for that I am jealous of you that you have a dedicated path. However don’t get caught up on letting a school define who you are. My parents went to college - very average universities (if I dare say that) and they are both incredibly successful. So much so that I am given the opportunity to attend any college I can get into. I will not get a dime of financial aid so I do feel very lucky. I know I will have choices it’s just in my mind, right now I think Michigan is the best fit for me. Having said that I feel that schools do turn down very qualified applicants. For whatever reason. I know it happens. Heck some of my friends are crushed their #1 turned them down so I just don’t like to see that people are so hung up on getting in or not getting into their “dream” school. Quite honestly I figure we will all end up somewhere and quite frankly I feel many will make the best of their college experience. In fact I have a feeling that everyone will love the school they end up at. That’s all I’m saying. UMich yes…now I do want to be accepted, will I be? Only admissions knows. I love math and science and found that while I went to Michigan and toured the campus everyone I met was like me. I also had a HAIL interview and it confirmed everything I wanted to know (as much as I could want to know not being in college) and I am sold on Michigan. Fantastic school. I hope we all hear very soon and we can begin planning for an awesome college experience.

Umich is actually one of the easiest public elites to get into out of state since they are a bigger school and have welcomed a very high percentage of out of state (40-50%) . Unc on the other hand limits out of state to 18% and therefore many oos ppl with 35 act and 4.0 were straight out rejected from unc but some got into princeton. Unc is much harder to get into out of state than michigan as they reject ivy league stat people. As long as u continue to show interest and get strong senior grades have hope!

@Eeeee127 u rock! =D>

@uofmkatedeferred99 Yeah I feel you. If you grow up U of M, you live U of M, you breathe U of M, and love U of M. I, like yourself, have a very strong emotional connection to the university, and seeing people who just applied for the hell of it, or just to add to their university body-count, end up getting in can be a bit demoralizing. However, don’t forget that getting in or not getting into Michigan is not a reflection on your character. They see your name and some numbers, not a true sense of your personality. I know it’s cheesy, but you’re more than just numbers, so don’t let a letter of admission (or lack there of) impact the way you feel about yourself.

Also, anything said here about your stats (or anyone’s stats for that matter) is meaningless in the long run and will end up having no bearing on if you get in or not, so don’t take offense when people say something about your (or anyone else’s) stats; we’re all just people on the internet, not admissions officers, and as much as we like to think they do, our opinions really don’t matter in the grand scheme of things.

@Seacoast @uofmkatedeferred99 The real reason why they’re easier on us in-staters is because our mommies and daddies help pay for the university every year through taxes.

Hi guys, sorta a lurker here- if I was deferred and can’t see my “view application decision” link on the portal anymore does that mean I’m probably getting in? Does it mean a decision is coming out soon?

@bigboy1738 Mazel Tov! Yes, you’re probably in.

@UofMorMSU couldn’t have said it better. So many people at my school applied to Umich knowing full well they are going to State and that just pisses me off beyond belief

@UofMorMSU does that mean I find out today tho? And how sure are we of that

Can someone answer please? I asked this earlier, but no one replied. Do our counselors send our mid year reports through the Common App?

@uofmkatedeferred99 @UofMorMSU
I agree with you guys so much. This thread has got me a little heated lol. Like, I want to go here so desperately and then there was one person who actually said “is Umich really that good”
Like, do you look at the school you apply to before you apply?

Or the OOS people who have had similar stats to mine that have gotten in.

My theory is that they have been accepting most of the OOS first, since the first wave seemed to be the majority OOS students, with a few in state. I’m hoping the rest will be primarily in state kids.

Or there’s a kid in my school (one of two to be accepted so far) who told me he wouldn’t decline his admission offer to Umich if he gets accepted to Yale. Like, that makes me upset, because if it came down to me not getting a spot in CoE because someone is actually going to like MIT but never told Umich I’d be upsetti

@bigboy1738 I’m not omniscient

@mithril54 Yes, they do. Some of them will automatically do it for all deferred students; for others you might have to ask them specifically.

@Straightoutta7
It’d be juicy if February releases were OOS, March releases were mainly In-state, and April was a mix.

@uofmkatedeferred99

Yeah ikr, but luckily for me, pretty much no one else who was deferred from my school followed up with a LoCI and they all decided to go to State. Honestly, just show interest and it’ll put you a step ahead.
