Deferred U Mich Ann Arbor Class of 2021

Just spent twenty minutes on the phone with tech support because I went to check WA (as I obsessively do a million times a day), and they said they had change my name and confirm my identity. I had to change my name to a more simple one and whatever and the guy was like well this happens when you are in the umich system and it was just a little thing but what does this mean lol!! My deferral hasn’t changed yet and I haven’t got any email. Just kinda weird that I had to confirm my identity… He said my friend account had expired don’t know if that is a good sign

I’m a student from one of the best schools in Texas. Before I transferred to this school, I was salutatorian at my old school. Now I’m in the bottom 30%. I have a Weighted GPA of 3.7, 28 on ACT. Pretty bad for UM, yet I still got deferred and not declined. I’m guessing it’s probably because I’m a Syrian immigrant who just moved here 4 years ago yet handled stuff pretty well. That was basically all what my activities and essays and short essays were about-helping refugees across the world, moving here, wanting to do that more in college. I think that was definitely my strong point. I think another thing I did well was do activities that most people prefer and usually don’t do, which I guess impressed them. I’m in no sports, I play no instrument, I’m in no clubs at school, not even NHS.

Seeing that UM didn’t straight up decline me is a good sign, because that means they’re definitely weighing my grades and ACT score as much as my activities. So I think judging our chances of admission solely on things that people usually think are what they’re looking for isn’t the right way to go about this. UM is my top choice and I’m really anxious because of how low my grades and ACT score are compared to the average applicant.

This is what I’ve gathered^. Also, from going through the 91 pages on this forum, decisions are mostly being posted on Fridays. Along with that, you know you got in when the link “View Decision” goes away on Wolverine Access. Is this correct?

Thank you all for being so supportive in this  This page actually is amazing at making us feel like we’re not in this alone.

We aren’t alone…many of us and this is just this school think of the hundreds of thousands waiting for those special words “we want YOU”. Hang in there. Really we don’t know when the decisions are coming out…it’s all a big guessing game cause it would be on their website or twitter if they wanted us to know. So pull up a chair and hang out with us! 8-}

@koomsbooms17 We think that because they updated WA, the disappearing link thing is fixed.

@alexacool10 Congrats!!! That almost certainly means you got in!

@AspiringScho1ar i don’t know ugh i don’t want get my hopes up!! i was locked out of my account which was really weird the guy said he had never seen it before! I go to a really low performing (99.9% white rural public) school and my scores were not great but i know that my friend got in EA with scores lower than so had (I had 1220 and 25 ACT but i really don’t believe in being judged by standardized tests) so if anyone is worried about low scores I think they are a factor but everything else is more important. I am kind of scared to find out if I get accepted because I have an almost full ride at eastern michigan honors college(next door to michigan) and it’s going to be so hard to choose between my dream and a chance to graduate with little to no debt

I’ve seen a lot of post containing phrases like “It’s harder for me/I didn’t get flat out denied because I’m [insert gender or variois ethnic minority here]” in this thread and none that properly adress those claims (It’s quite possible that no one is aware of Michigan state law). Reagrdless, you guys do realize that Affirmafive Action is banned in Michigan and has been since 2006, right? In fact, the University of Michigan was involved in two seperate supreme court cases relating to AA (Gratz and Grutter v. Bollinger). Because of the the state voter initiative and the rulings on one of the courst cases, the University of Michigan cannot take race, gender, religion, or ethnicity into consideration during the process of undergraduate admissions. I thought you guys might benifit from knowing that, or at least find it interesting.

@Filthy_Frank I think they can actually take race into account in order to create a more diverse campus. However, they can’t have racial quotas or point systems that award more points to minority applicants.

@alexacool10 Those are fantastic stats! don’t sell yourself short. my friend got in early with a 19 ACT. Yours is way higher than his. Your account being locked just means they are resetting it to become a student account vs a guest account. Congrats again

do they send an email as soon as you get in/don’t ? I’m so sick of opening my portal only to be disappointed

@LetMeInPlz2017 Nope, not in Michigan. The voter initiative (which is now law) clearly states schools in the state of Michigan can not legally look at race, gender, etc. during undergraduate admissions regardless of the intentions behind it. You can also look at UMich common data sets for the past few years and it is made clear that a race and gender is “not considered”. However, you are correct about the banning of quotas. The supreme court case does allow for race to play a factor for schools in states where AA is legal (Michigan is not one of them) as long as no quotas are being met.

How long did it take you guys to get responses to your letters of continued interest?

@LetMeInPlz2017 I sent an email and a letter. The email I got an automated response within 24 hours, I didn’t get anything regarding the letter

Wait someone got in with a 19 ACT? LOL I’m just chilling over here deferred with a 1520 SAT…

@college11010 I sent an email to my admissions counselor 4 days ago(I know it’s late, but it can’t hurt, right?) and still haven’t gotten any reply, not even an automated response (lol oops I posted this from my other account which I thought I lost the password for and couldn’t log into :-? )

@Facepalm99999 From what I’ve heard, after the letter of continued interest, the less emails you send the better. I don’t think you’re going to get a response
And @Filthy_Frank , they can’t take your race listed on common app into consideration, true. But if in your essays you clearly state that you’re a specific race or ethnicity or from a specific country they can’t do anything about it, and it’s just up to the person reading your application. And it’s not even about affirmative action and whether they have it or not. It’s about well does UM want the their applicants to be diverse and bring in new perspectives or do they want the same kind of majority of students they always get anyway? You know?

I’ve sent about 5 emails to rep and she’s responded to every one

I thought the UofM didn’t want anything extra in the application, right? Wasn’t there a quote from them saying that the most successful students are the ones that give them exactly what they need and not anything more? That’s why I haven’t really emailed my regional counselor except for LOCI and 7th Semester confirmation. Also, @rangersfan800, what could have you possible sent 5 emails about. lol did i miss some other things I should have mentioned to my counselor?

@UofMichigan1999 Well that was the only email I’ve sent to my counselor and it was my LOCI. Do you think it means anything that I haven’t gotten any response?

@Facepalm99999 I don’t think so. Did you send it recently or a while ago? If I was more than a week ago, I would definitely do a follow up. LOCI has been known as a semi-important part in determining who is serious about attending. Hopefully I was of help!
