Deferred U Mich Ann Arbor Class of 2021

Maybe those who are mad at UM, or the process, and need to vent-which is totally understandable-should create their own thread of whatever on CC, and those who don’t wanna hear about complains should create their own thread, keep it civil without any rude words or comments or “roasting”, and talk about stats and stuff like civil people-and that’s totally understandable as well.

@hpcsa my son (in state, COE, EA deferred) received, and replied, to request for HAIL interview a couple of weeks ago. Have not heard anything from U of M since. Not even a reply to the HAIL for scheduling.

@koomsbooms17 You can create the thread if you want.

@danmhow I would be calling the office that the HAIL interview request came from at this point.

@danmhow Yes, same here - this is the HAIL interview scheduling information we received today, to take place some time over the coming weeks. Good luck!

@Eeeee127 I’m an instate applicant with decent stats. 3.8 UM GPA, 31 ACT, and plenty extracurriculars. My only “low” stat is my GPA (mid 50 is 3.87 for last year) and that is with many AP and honors courses.

Does Michigan include grades from high school classes taken in middle school (i.e. earth science, integrated algebra) in your GPA?

@Filthy_Frank you shouldve gotten into lsa with those stats. did you apply to engineering? engineering is much more competitive

@wisemink no umich does not look at middle school classes unless they count towards your high school gpa like algebra 1

@Eeeee127 I thought so too. I’m an LSA applicant. Psychology and Chemistry specifically.

@Filthy_Frank I have almost the same exact stats, 31, 3.83, in state, 6 APs. Best of luck, hopefully we both get in, sure was frustrating seeing kids from my school with the same or worse stats getting into LSA.

If I took AP Gov and Econ in the same class, is that considered 2 AP’s?

@UofMorMSU I believe so, I’m in something similar to that where I’m taking AP gov and AP comparative politics in one class and It’s considered two

did you guys send in a letter of continued interest, first semester grades, and ask your counselor to advocate for u?

@Eeeee127 I’m not sure there is such a thing as “should have gotten in with those stats.” I thought so too but that all changed with the deferral. My daughter has a 3.98, 33 ACT, 5 AP’s including AP Cal, NHS, 2 Varsity sports and was deferred EA. It’s a numbers game; there are just so many smart and talented kids going for too few spots. Wishing everyone good vibes over the next few weeks.

@waitinggamemom most in state people with those stats get in since only 10,000 in state ppl apply compared to 50,000 out of state ppl. it’s a different story for out of state applicants. i heard that not having much leadership or extracurricular activities can get u rejected even if u have great stats as thats what happened to a girl at my top 5 feeder school who had 34 act and 3.9 gpa. also if it looks like u don’t care much about umich in your essays that can get you rejected too.

Thanks @Eeeee127 for the words of encouragement. She is in-state. Only time will tell. Best of luck to you!

Remember that even if you don’t get into umich this year, you can always transfer! It’s easier to get in through transfer route and remember that you will end up somewhere great and that it’s how you take advantage of your college experience that matters more than the name! all of you who got deferred have great potential to succeed in life no matter where you go.

@Eeeee127 Not true. My D and several of her friends (all in state) have those stats or higher and they were all deferred. At this point, only one has an acceptance and 6 others are waiting.

I have what probably seems like an obvious question, but I do not know the answer. What is a “UM” GPA as compared to a regular weighted or unweighted GPA? Thanks.
