Deferred U Mich Ann Arbor Class of 2021

Michigan recalculated your GPA for years 9-11. The “UM” GPA uses the absolute value of all grades (all As and A-s are 4.0 all B+s Bs and B-s are 3.0, etc.)

@gdcap62 Got it! So our school does not have plus or minus grades, so this would not really apply to me I guess. Thanks so much for the information.

for all of you high stat people who were deferred, just keep showing interest and remember that you can probably get into other colleges at the same level as umich, transfer into umich, or suceed anywhere you go.

is there any telling when the next batch will come out?

march

@gdcap62 do you know if they recalculate for international applicants as well?

@nyanpasu_ Yes. Everyone.

No one is safe from Michigan’s grade recalculation

@gdcap62 I have a question-so does this new way of calculating our GPAs put all classes AP, Honors, and regular at the same level? Or do AP and Honors count higher? This is really helpful, thank you for sharing!

And @UofMorMSU - I really do not care what happens on this page. I’m not getting offended by any of this. Just giving a suggestion to anyone who feels hurt or offended by this thread.

@koomsbooms17 All classes are GPA weighted equally. However, they (claim to) look at course rigor as a very important factor (i.e AP, Honors, etc.)

In most likelihood, the acceptance rate at Michigan, this year, will be below 25%. This is partly due to the fact that a the pool of OOS and International applicants is getting bigger and very competitive. Unfortunately, the selection process has to tackle both the in-state and the rest in a manner that the acceptance rate comes down, the yield goes up, and all the numbers like GPA, ACT, SAT move to higher ranges. I am sure all efforts are taken by the Adcoms to remain as objective as possible, but who can deny that a great amount of subjective opinion comes into play while deciding on the final verdict.

All the numbers that I read, from different posts in this thread, reflect a fairly good amount of academic standing of the applicants, and none should consider that a negative decision as any reflection to their academic standing and other achievements.

Good luck to all!

how is % GPA out of 100 recalculated ? My school has % grade and school scale like that 94-100 is excellent / 84-93 good / 74-83 is satisfactory.

@koomsbooms17 It doesn’t change the GPA but they clearly state they look at whether a student takes the rigorous course (honors, AP or IB) when offered.

Very interesting article in a local Michigan newspaper last week: https://www.michigandaily.com/section/statement/numbers-game

Yes, the number of out of state people have increased, taking in state students’ spots even though umich is a public university and they should be serving the in state residents first.

did anyone say that the next wave is probably going to be tomorrow?

@jeepcherokee No

I don’t think so. It is all just speculation at this point.

That article really puts things into perspective. I am kind of envious of those students that applied pre-common app. An acceptance rate of around 50%? Holy god!!! Whatever, times change and I remain loyal and judge the University knows if I am a good “fit” or not.

@gdcap62 The Michigan Daily is the student newspaper.

@KMich Thanks! I realized that after I sent the article. If you ask me the common app has been a blessing and a curse. Yes it has made it easier for students but there is NO reason someone should really be applying to more than 10 schools at the absolute MOST. One of my S’s friends applied to 21. That’s insane!
